A Christian college in Wisconsin is dropping its Crusaders nickname after nearly 50 years, claiming the moniker has become outdated in a more global society, university officials told FoxNews.com.
Maranatha Baptist University in Watertown and its Division III athletic teams have used the name since its founding in 1968. Matt Davis, the universitys executive vice president, said no complaints have been received by the school and stressed that it coincides with its name change from Maranatha Baptist College in December.
But I also agree that times change and we understand that context changes, Davis told FoxNews.com. Our world has changed since 9/11 and weve become a more global society with the Internet. The heartbeat behind this was not political correctness, but expanded opportunities for our students.
Ibrahim Hooper, communications director at the Council on American-Islamic Relations, told FoxNews.com he welcomed the "Crusaders" change, but said he found team names or mascots that incorporate race or ethnicity more problematic, particularly those pertaining to Native Americans.
"I welcome the spirit behind the change," Hooper said. "It's obvious they thought about this. I applaud their effort."

sick. and sad.
So I suppose the Ephesians 6 warrior preparing for spiritual warfare is out.
More Political Correctness....and Jesus wept..............
Maybe they should switch it to Dhimi’s.
times change context changes..
This from a Christian school administrator?
I supposed teams using weinie whackers and muzzie maulers will be asked to change now too.
Going forward, the teams will take the field as the Maranatha Baptist “Crazed Jihadi”
Meanwhile, can anyone name ONE SINGLE change that Islamic institutions have made anywhere in the world to accommodate the new “global society”?
How many new churches have been build in Mecca?
How many non-Muslims have been allowed to visit Mecca in the past year?
How many Bibles have been permitted in Saudi Arabia this year?
Well, Infidels is a good substitute....................
I think that the team name should be changed from “The Crusaders” to either “The Dimmies” or “The Calf Ears.”
THe Crusaders saved Christianity for the west. It’s a name they should be proud of.
“The heartbeat behind this was not political correctness ...”
Gee, why would anyone possibly think that?!?! I’m shocked by the very suggestion!!!
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this wisconsin interest ping list.
I’m all for keeping history alive, but other than the professional grievance lobby, who gives a second thought to these names? I hear Crusaders and don’t immediately flash to war throughout the Holy Land. It’s just a name. The way they carry on, you’d think Maranatha Baptist University’s mascot rides into athletic events on a white horse wearing the cross of St. George and dragging a muslim corpse behind it.
Having volunteered at St Philomena in Carson and having met and spoken with them, I don’t think the Carmelite nuns that run the school plan on changing their “Crusader” name anytime soon.
My daughter graduated from a Christian university. They are still the Crusaders.
Their new nickname is: WUSSES
Supposedly this was in contrast to the Demon Deacons and the Blue Devils.
Matt Davis is an idiot
And the West has capitulated to imperialist Islamic supremacists.
My high school still uses Crusaders.
More of that “touchy feely” type of Christanity that accomplishes nothing.
No change of heart, no change of life, but everyone likes them.
Please don't hurt us.
just a thought on this. I have met some of students and a coach from the Maranatha. They don’t seem to be the type thats just bowing to political correctness. This may be more in line of other schools dropping Bible College from their name. International missions are finding it increasingly harder to get into countries because of their names and are changing. muslim countries are getting better at ferreting out missionaries, outing them and making it very hard to do any work. obviously to muslims who are in the constantly offended club, this name is a bad thing. just hope that’s the only reason why.
Campus Crusade for Christ also bowed to political correctness and now calls itself CRU, whatever that means.
Don’t they remember this verse?
But whoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
yes. and it is such a distortion of history to condemn the crusades... had they been more successful we here in America might not be threatened with annihilation from all the Iranian IslamoNazi nuclear ICBMs today.
When you’re out of Crusaders, you’re out of fighters ...
The Lukewarm Spews
“But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 10:33
Though far beyond the ken of most Freepers and aren't they lucky to be younger than me, is the series on early television. (1949-1959) A good laugh here, if one uses Google/Youtube and puts in
The daffy antics and the various "villains" are it's theme. One day someone is going to laugh out loud at the politically correct fraternity and start the ball rolling. I hope to be around when that happens.
How about “The Marauding Islamists’ Asskickers”?
Disgusting cave to PC. Again. Sickening.
As a kid I watched Crusader Rabbit long before hearing of the real Crusaders (whom I would always regard as heroic). A lot of late 1950’s cars had fins & from behind some of them looked just like the cartoon character.
That’s ok, my alma mater, Christendom College, uses the name for its teams. That one less team for it to be confused with.
I think ferreting out for the muzzies means killing Christians.
No big deal. There never was a Baptist crusader.
How about “The Inquisitioners”?
Should probably drop “Maranatha” as well. Might incite riots in Indonesia. And that Christian thing,...well...
