LIVORNO, Italy, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- A new torpedo from Whitehead Sistemi Subacquei has been launched in a test by the Italian Navy.
The company said the Black Shark advanced torpedo was fired from the submarine Scire in "push out" mode, a water ram expulsion system that ejects the torpedo by means of high water pressure.
The firing was a test to assess progress in development of the torpedo, which will replace A-184 torpedoes now in service with the Italian Navy.
"The Black Shark is the result of Italian research and cutting-edge technology," said Alessandro Franzoni, chief executive officer of WASS, "an example of national excellence in the field of underwater defense equipment through the use of innovative technical solutions for the propulsion systems, power generation and electro-acoustics.
"Thanks to its high quality standards it will succeed in all main international markets."
Whitehead Sistemi Subacquei said the test took place in the Gulf of La Spezia but gave no other details.
Whitehead Sistemi Subacquei is a subsidiary of Finmeccanica and produces underwater systems

I’m surprised that anybody is still developing new torpedoes and why?
In case the State Dept doesn’t hand over Amanda Knox?
ROFLMAO!! Now we on to something.
The Admiral Belgrano sinks after being hit by a British torpedo in the Falklands war.
But what ships are they going to sink?
Ba-da Bing! Ba-da Boom!
Sounds like it’s for sale to other countries as much or more than for their own navy. Still, if you have a navy, might as well have a good one.
figured it was a calzone.
The US Navy ships are USS, the British Navy is HMS, and the Italian Navy is AMB: Atsa Ma Boat!
The Italian torpedo sailed into a foriegn port and changed sides, just as it was designed to do.
And why does the new Italian navy have glass-bottomed boats?
Actually it was the General Belgrano, not Admiral. But one torpedo in a main space was all it took (the first torpedo blew off her bow but that hit alone was survivable.)
Hey, you're right, I misremembered. God I hate getting old.
I wish we could have gotten the Phoenix back as a museum ship.
Probably never would have happened though—— any gooberment that could scrap the Enterprise ( CV6) wouldn’t have made the effort for a light cruiser.
OK now that was funny....
Now that’s my kind of Italian Sub!!
actually I could go for one right this minute......
Water pushout....must be a very quiet launch. Shrouds around the propellers might be quiet, too. Nose is flat. Not sure why but might create a broad pressure wave that makes it difficult for sonar? Stealth torpedo?
I thought it would look like a hoagie
I can’t wait ‘til lunch, as usual
Exactly. A torpedo under the keel of a ship will be an almost guaranteed kill. All modern navies (including the USN) have advanced torpedoes and torpedo modernization/new generation programs. A torpedo under a ship is a legit nightmare scenario ...more so than a anti-ship missile.
