Progressivism Kills
National Review ^ | February 1, 2014 | Kevin D. Williamson

Posted on 02/01/2014 2:32:32 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

There are many horrific stories to be told about the implosion of Detroit, once the nation’s most prosperous city, today its poorest. There is the story of its corrupt public institutions, its feckless leaders, its poisonous racial politics, its practically nonexistent economy, the riots that have led to its thrice being occupied by federal troops. The most horrific story may be that of the death of its children.

Detroit has the highest child-mortality rate of any American city, exceeding that of many parts of what we used to call the Third World........

.....Detroit represents nothing less than progressivism in its final stage of decadence: Worried that unionized public-sector workers are looting your city? Detroit is already bankrupt, unable to provide basic services expected of it — half the streetlights don’t work, transit has been reduced, neighborhoods go unpatrolled. Worried that public-sector unions are ruining your schools? Detroit’s were ruined a generation or more ago, the results of which are everywhere to be seen in the city...........

...The result of all that municipal “investment”? For children newborn through age 18, Detroit sees 120 deaths per 100,000 each year — a rate 26 percent higher than second-place child-killer Philadelphia. That’s nearly two and a half times the rate in Los Angeles, which isn’t exactly a leafy suburban paradise. Every time our progressive friends come to us with another idea for transferring wealth from the productive economy to them and their friends, they scold us: “Think of the children!” But those who resist their efforts to do to the country at large what they have done to Detroit are thinking of the children....

Equality of misery, that’s about all it brings.

I lived in Buffalo 22 years which is somewhat like Detroit but marginally better at avoiding, or more likely delaying the same fate.

Note my tagline.

Yes. The Obama brand of death zones - Liberals continue to double down on this scheme - growing ever shriller (like all failed 3rd World hell holes whose control depends on dictates) blaming it’s failure on those who have yet to succumb.

Sorry, Williamson is wrong. It’s not progressivism that kills cities...it’s the people in them. Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis....all progressive cities (or capitalist cities run by progressives), thriving cities and the lowest crime rates of virtually all major American cities. What is the thing Williamson will not or cannot mention? Detroit is 85% black.

When you have a few minutes, read this. It's very good.

The White Ghetto In Appalachia the country is beautiful and the society is broken.

“Detroit is 85% black.”

It is now, but that was not the case in Detroit’s heyday. It may be that there’s a law of Progressivism similar to Gresham’s Law in economics that says “Bad money drives out good”, namely this law of Progressivism states that “Unremitting Progressive government will always eventually drive out the productive people.” We’ll call this law “Galt’s Law”. An obvious corollary is that “Mostly the non-productive people remain.” Another corollary, slightly less obvious, is that the flight of the productive accelerates as the proportion of non-productive to productive increases.

It does appear, however, that in U.S. urban areas where Galt’s Law has had time to fully fulminate that the vast majority left behind after the productive have fled are poor,nnon-educated blacks.

These cities you mentioned are only a matter of time from attracting and metastatizing nonproductive takers as the municipal unions bleed the cities future revenue. Makers move out, taxes go down, services are cut back, crime blooms, schools fail and well, you have Detroit. Been to Portland. Already started. Remember the. Community organizers exercising their 1st amendment riot rights a few years back. All Marxists. Just Detroit in the 60’s. Give it time and corruption.

Riots were in Seattle, not Portland.

You might be right. But at the moment, ethnic composition determines the amount of crime and deterioration in most cities.

Thanks, I have read it. At any rate, I was aware of Appalachian life many years before. I’ve made notice of hill people who complained about their poor lives there but refused to leave. The fact is, many of those people did leave Appalachia for better lives somewhere else. I’ve known a few who moved to my area of the country looking for a better life.

“Progressivism Kills”

Especially when it metastasizes into fullblown totalitarianism; complete with re-education, work camps,
goose-stepping, uniformly-dressed followers, and mental institutions filled with those who don’t agree with the Progressive agenda.

IMHO

If only we gave amnesty to 10s of millions of illegal immigrants. That will cure all America’s ills.
