PLA's J-10C may be able to surpass US and EU counterparts

The J-10C — the upgrade version of China's J-10 fighter, designed by the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group — may be able to catch up with the American F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and surpass most of its European counterparts, according to the Beijing-based Sina Military Network.

China is still unable to fully compete against the United States, Russia and France in developing 4.5-generation fighters, but the advanced fighters are important for the People's Liberation Army Air Force and Navy Air Force to fill the gap before fifth-generation stealth fighters — such as the J-20 and J-31 — are ready for service.

Many of China's neighbors have equipped their military forces with 4.5-fighters since 2005 when the Republic of Korea Air Force received its first 60 F-15K Slam Eagle. Singapore began to receive F-15SG Strike Eagles in 2008, while Australia got its F/A-18E/F in 2009. India and Malaysia have also purchased the Russian-built Su-30MKI and Su-30MKM. Since 2012, Russia also deployed Su-30SM and Su-35s to the Chinese border.

China is around 15 years behind the United States and 12 years behind some European powers in the development of 4.5-fighters, the report said, adding this is the reason why a J-10C 4.5-generation fighter is needed for China to replace both the J-10A and J-10B in the future. Equipped with active phased array radar and avionic system similar to the J-20, the Sina Military Network stressed that the J-10C can be more powerful than the Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale.

China will also develop the J-15B based on its J-15 carrier-based fighter. The report said that both the J-10C and J-15B can be as powerful as the US F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. Both fighters are estimated to begin their service with the PLA Air Force and Navy Air Force by 2016. Meanwhile, most of China's fighters in 2020 will be 4.5-generation fighters, while the fifth generation fighters will begin their service with front line units as well, according to the Sina Military Network.

Nothing quite like an unbiased source.

Once upon a time, no matter how good the aircraft is, it was the pilot that truly made the difference--

However, nowadays technology is making the aircraft more capable at long distances where dog fighting never happens and pilot experience counts for less and less.

An example is the advanced active and passive electronic warfare systems that allow the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor to acquire targets for its own weapons at ranges greater than their opponents.

If China is able to steal, reverse engineer and make work such for their warplanes, it could make it a very, very long day if they decide to take on the US Air Force and Navy in the Pacific. Especially after Obama, his Liberal Democrat allies and RINOs get finished ripping the guts our of our military forces.

IMHO, the F15 is still the worlds best war fighter.

The F22 is the game changer and if they can work out the problems on why pilots are blacking out, selling a couple of hundred to Israel, India and the ROK would scare the crap out of China.

It’s an F 16 with bumps added to the fuselage.

The two f15s got trounced by an RAF eurofighter in an off the cuff mock battle a couple of years ago. No doubt it was a great plane in its day, but it certainly isn’t the best any more, it should be retired within the next ten years. As for this scenario, it seems silly to be comparing the j10 to a 20+ year old design that is going to be retiring within the next decade. How does it compare next to the f35, which is the aircraft that will be its real contemporary and rival?

The F-35 is a giant boondoggle. The F-18 is hands down a better platform. The F-35 was built to be all things to all services. It’s slow, very maintenance intensive, and it cost too damn much per copy. The F-35 is a step backward.

OK, supposedly the tooling was mothballed when the contract for more was cancelled.

But what are you going to haul “stuff” with? The F-15E is the most capable high performance flat bed dump truck of our time. The line is still open. More should be built to replace the now aging airframes that have had the crap used out of them.

I guess someone will suggest drones.

“It’s an F 16 with bumps added to the fuselage.”

Those bumps look like Conformal Fuel Tanks. They help to increase the combat radius of the fighter.

It’s still just an ugly F-16 without the performance.

"The F-35 is a giant boondoggle. The F-18 is hands down a better platform. "

Eh? It has a greater payload and combat radius (even in the F35B configuration) in addition to much greater avionics and sensors, much simpler to fly, and off course, stealth technology, which whilst not as great as the F-22, certainly makes it far less observable than the FA/18. The only real factor against the F35 vs the F/A is the greater per-unit cost and maintenance, but this is the price you pay for cutting edge tech. I'm sure sopwith camels would be even cheaper, but that isn't exactly anything like the most important factor when choosing a modern combat aircraft.

The F35 is being built to primarily replace AV8’s, F16’s, F15’s and unfortunately, A10’s (I don’t agree with this one). I suspect the Navy will keep quite a few Superhornets around as they are quite capable aircraft, but lack much of the technology the F35 will bring to bear.

The aforementioned airframes and designs are over 40 years old...

The F35 brings an unmatched LINK/COMM-NAV system that permits all three services to communicate and integrate with one another, and the SA it brings as a result of its sensor suite during combat is just one of those things that one would have a hard time putting a price on.

The handling of the STOVL variant as compared to the AV8 is unsurpassed...the aircraft basically lands itself vs. the pilot going into task saturation mode...notwithstanding the payload differential of the STOVL vs. the AV8.

The CTOL version has twice as much internal fuel capacity as the F16 and more than the F15...11 payload stations vs. 9 on the F16...MGTOW is ~68k lbs. and it is designed to go 1.6+ mach...

CV version is quite similar to CTOL...

As for the “maintenance intensive” comment, is this your opinion or do you have some factual information to support your assertion...as with any new technology, there is always a learning curve. The initial stats for any aircraft don’t look good because the processes and procedures haven’t been vetted by the maintainers in the field.

Once they have had a chance to make corrections, updates and suggestions...the processes will speed up. The maintainers will be finding new and innovative ways to perform tasks on aircraft for years to come...I know because I was one.

Keep in mind...it is a STRIKE fighter...remember the F117? It was designated a fighter, but it was not even close to being a fighter. It was a STRIKE aircraft designated as a fighter based on size and skirting SALT Treaty rules.
