Heroin overdose deaths across the country are spiking as a deadly new variant of the drug mixed with a powerful painkiller is spreading from New Hampshire to Washington State.
The lethal combination of heroin and fentanyl, an opiate used to soothe the pain of cancer patients, is blamed for about 100 deaths from coast to coast. It is variously labelled as bud ice, income tax and theraflu, authorities say.
The hardest hit states in the epidemic are Maryland, with more than three dozen deaths since September, and Pennsylvania, with almost two dozen this month alone, according to reports.

wait are you trying to say heroin is bad for you?
This ain’t your daddy’s heroin any more.
That’s one way to clean ‘em out.
Sounds like the perfect drug for criminal executions.
I wonder if that was what Philip Seymour Hoffman (the great actor who died today) was using. It said that the heroin baggies found in the apartment where he died haven’t been seen since 2008. There was some speculation that he was combining this with Fenfenyl.
That said, prayers for him. And for all the sad people who die of drug overdoses.
The infamous “Tango and Cash” smack that killed a number of junkies in the 1990s was also tainted with fentanyl. Supposedly, some of the users died within seconds of the injection.
Fentanyl, as I understand it (medical types, feel free to correct me here), exerts a powerful suppression effect on the respiratory system, far more so that heroin or other opiods/opiates.
Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead of an apparent drug overdose
Aye yes, we wonders...
“white heroin responsible for at least 100 deaths across the country”
The object is responsible, not the user. LOL
The heroin isn’t responsible for the deaths. The people who used the heroin are responsible for their own deaths.
like that kind of logic is going to change it
One of our FReepers is on the EMT team in upstate NY and was called to a case of a victim on this substance on Thursday night. Not sure whether the stricken on lived, or not. I think it was not.
She said she resented the use of the term “overdose”. Since the substance is illegal, there is no dose. Any dose could be the victim’s last since the drug is unregulated. She thinks it should be noted that the victim died from ingestion of an “illegal substance”. “Overdose” is misleading.
A friend of mine nearly died from a dihydrogen monoxide overdose.
I wonder if that substance is regulated.
Look, there are two kinds of heroin — there’s the bad kind, and then there’s the ... wait. Okay. There’s one kind of heroin ...
If it were black heroin it would be rasis
To make matters worse, most of the heroin in the US is Mexican brown heroin, which is weaker than white heroin.
Fentanyl is approximately 100 times more potent than morphine, with 100 micrograms of fentanyl approximately equivalent to 10 mg of morphine and 75 mg of pethidine (meperidine) in analgesic activity.
Estimated LD50 for humans is about 2.1mg for a 150 pound user, which means at that dose, half the people of that weight would die.
Mixing heroin and Fentanyl is downright insane.
Dihydrogen monoxide is dangerous in large quantities. it can cause clothing to shrink too.
Record heroin deaths- caused by something besides the Democrat Party profiting from Afghan heroin.
Anything besides that...says the media.
Phillip Seymore Hoffman???
That's what happens when you get accustomed to bureaucracrats running everything. They hijack the proper scientific / clinical meanings of words and replace them with statutory / regluatory meanings.
IMHO, being able and willing to easily integrate that change into and replace those meanings in our thought processes is not a good thing.
Well we get a bill for it every few months so in a certain way it is.
But, if only drugs were legal...
Did it kill that actor in NYC.I read that he was found with the needle still in his arm.
Not if it's "medicinal" or "recreational" heroin.
Especially the White Heroin, next we will hear that a disproportionate number of the victims were Black. That damn White racism on attack again!
I was just wondering about that myself.
So without the painkiller, heroin is safe?
Change what? Don’t put heroin in your body and you won’t die from heroin.
It’s no different than people blaming a gun for killing someone and not the person who actually shot the gun.
Hair-splitting If it kills, it was too much - an overdose
no i meant stupid people do stupid things and you cant fix stupid
The continued use of the phrase “partner” for a hetero relationship seems strange ... looks like they are trying to defuse a code-word.
I kinda think it's the shooter's fault, myself.
In the Philip Seymour Hoffman article linked in post 10, that is.
it can’t mean “Washington State”???...I mean we got the legal pot now so everybody should be happy, happy, happy right?.....afterall, haven’t the libtards told us repeatedly if you legalize pot, every body will be happy and nobody will need to use the harder stuff?......
I just can’t understand why people who have everything going for them do such stupid things. I kind of understand why somebody who has nothing turns to drugs as a way to forget life, but I’m just so tired of these rich people being so self centered. I do not feel sorry for them.
I do feel sorry for the children he left behind.
Heroins never safe because it might be cut ten times or not at all. An ex-addict explains addicts watch for the unconscious junkie on the corner - not too save him, but to see what brand of smack he just shot up is that gives such a powerful high so they can go buy some for themselves. Self preservation is not a priority; a good high is.
good point....I’m going to use that in my vernacular....
That’s why I want to legalize it.
Get the best quality smack out there, and let the bodies fall where they will.
I never heard of him either....
A person near and dear found a better way to get away from street METH. Coupled with a nonjudgmental health care prescriber it is a win win.
my friend told me it wasn’t the dope—it was the cut
