US ready to return to moon

America is preparing to land a robot on the moon for the first time in four decades.

Nasa is looking for private partners to participate in the project that will see a new generation of rovers wandering across the moon’s surface.

The American space agency has set up a programme called Catalyst to exploit commercial opportunities offered by the moon.

It believes that eventually there will be a market for commercial cargo trips to the lunar surface.

"As Nasa pursues an ambitious plan for humans to explore an asteroid and Mars, US industry will create opportunities for Nasa to advance new technologies on the moon," said Greg Williams, Nasa's deputy associate administrator for the Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate.

It was a bad idea when Newt said it and it is an equally bad idea when Obama’s fanboys are echoing it. Our fed space program is demonstrating that reinventing the wheel is essentially the best it can do. We will be figuring out how to make actual Frankenstein monsters before the feds are able to place human colonies on Mars.

And not to mention that to live on Mars, we would have to go underground in caves. Same with the moon, but no gravity there to speak of, so things would be a bit messy. What’s the point of going to Mars in order to live in a cave? Right wing nutjobs do that here already. You know, the WTSHTF crowd?/s

Probably so it can be claimed by "The Universal Caliphate"!

Pay China to send Barky and Moochie to the moon (but only with enough fuel for a one way ride). Tell them its an out of this world junket on the U.S. taxpayer's dollar. They'll go in a heart beat.

Yeah, it’s amazing how many “conservatives” romanticize about this worthless bureaucracy. If you want relics from your boyhood, go buy some baseball cards and stop pretending that NASA is any better than the other remnants of the Great Society.

Meanwhile, private enterprise is due to put people in space in 2014!

Yeap, if you like Obamacare, you'll LOVE "Obama in Space"...

I fully expect the first Obama regime lunar reports to show that the moon is made of cheese and that it's all melting because of Global Warming.

DAMN REPUBLICANS!!!

Finally a market for those Chevy Volts!

Speaking of green energy, Obama will push for an electric powered rocket to go to the Moon. That will put a lot of Americans to work. And he'll pay the Chinese to install an electric charging station on the Moon, for the return trip to Earth.

No this is a great opportunity for our government, to actually do something useful.

Back to the moon!

I’m all for this. 100%.

"I work at NASA. This guy is a walking, talking leadership vacuum. If he had any leadership qualities, he checked them at the door when Obama appointed him. No original thoughts, no original ideas, no confidence, nothing."

Oh FRiend. I am SO sorry to hear that!

I watched the Apollo Program unfold and watched men walk on the moon. It was fantastic, inspiring technical innovation for generations!

It's sad - we are so capable, yet lack the vision and leadership to move forward in our accomplishments. What a waste.

You are a statist.

If you want to go to the Moon, support private industry that can actually do it. Without robbing me.

No.

We need government to set the pace for America industry. Sure build up a civilian program, but keep on pushing from the government standpoint as well.

Our industry is useless right now. Go in any store, and all you find is “made in China”.

I’m all for our government being strongly involved in our space program.

We flat-out, completely disagree on this.
