The James Bond-style smart gun that can ONLY be fired by its owner
Daily Mail ^ | 2 February 2014

A company has developed a high-tech pistol it says can help curb gun violence by allowing only its owner pull the trigger.

The slick Smart System gun from Armatix looks like something James Bond might carry and uses watch that transmits an identifying radio frequency that prevents everyone but its wearer from firing.

The gun is one of several competing for a $1 million prize from the Smart Tech Challenges Foundation, a group started by tech investors in response to the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, where 26 were killed in 2012.

And this would stop gang-bangers from killing each other how, exactly?

“watch that transmits an identifying radio frequency that prevents everyone but its wearer from firing.”

So it’s not specific to the owner, just whoever clubs the owner and has the watch.

I bet transmitting a strong CW carrier would prevent the receiver from getting its signal from the watch.

Ya know, we oughta start calling these people who want to restrict the 2nd out for what they are:
RACISTS.
The very first gun control laws in America were done to keep certain races from doing things that those who enacted the laws didn’t want them to be doing.
Just start calling out to them, “Gun control is RAAAACIST!”

Uh, speaking of Sandy Hook...

If the kid's mom had owned one of these guns, wouldn't he have taken the wristwatch thingie when he took the guns to go kill people with, after he killed his mom?

Huh?

F'n stupid.

Silly. Solar powered. Or wind powered. Just stick the watch “someplace” where some “air flow” might occur and charge it up. So now the bad guy needs to steal the watch and the gun? Simple. Keep the watch locked away inside a transmitter proof cage. You can leave the gun just lyin’ around. Which most guns do anyway. Lazy pieces of crap.

Exactly.

When the cops trust THEIR lives to them, then I will.

And suppose I’m not home, and my wife or kids need to use it quickly for a kick-in style home invasion?

Nah.

I’ll keep what I got - regardless.

After all... THIS IS MY MOST BASIC RIGHT - Constitutional, Civil, and Human Right.

You can bet your last nickel that the cops have already figured out a way to disable them remotely.

Just what i have searching for: a gun which lights up in the dark.

I hope they have liability insurance to cover the first failure.

Smart is a matter of opinion, if someone is breaking in I don’t want to be messing around with putting a watch on.

I’m trying to remember the name of the gun writer/hunter who said the most terrifying sound in the world is when your firearm goes “click” instead of “BANG”. Especially when the animal you are aiming at is higher than you on the food chain.

I think it was Peter Hathaway Capstick but I’m not sure.

Earth calling to Smart Tech Challenges Foundation:

Semiautomatic firearms are 100 year old technology that can probably be practiced in your basement with a modest investment in fabrication gear (including 3D printers).

Maybe for their next trick, Smart Tech Challenges will come up with biometric lock-out solutions for baseball bats and pointy dinnerware.
