Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Tuesday that he does not see any way the Democratic-controlled Senate and GOP-led House will agree on immigration reform legislation this year.
ADVERTISEMENT McConnells comments, which came after he met with the Senate GOP conference over lunch, poured cold water over the growing buzz there could be an immigration deal this year.
McConnell said a deals unlikely given what he called the irresolvable differences between the Senate and House.
I think we have sort of an irresolvable conflict here, he told reporters. The Senate insists on comprehensive [legislation]. The House says it wont go to conference with the Senate on comprehensive and wants to look at [it] step by step.
I dont see how you get to an outcome this year with the two bodies in such a different place, he said.
Senate Democrats say immigration legislation must include all the major components of reform, tying a path to citizenship for an estimated 11 million immigrants with border security and worker visa provisions.
House GOP leaders released a set of immigration reform principles last week during a three-day retreat on Marylands Eastern Shore. The principles largely reflect the Senate-passed bill but does not include a direct path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants.
McConnell, however, said Tuesday he thinks the bigger obstacle is that Senate Democrats want to overhaul the nations immigration laws in one large package while House Republicans want piecemeal reform.
Senate Republican Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) said a comprehensive package is unpalatable to many Republicans.

They keep telling us this every day. Are they hoping we will take it off our radar screen so they can push it thru secretly some holiday weekend?
That is what Byron York thinks.....the denial is boob bait to get the American people off their trail. They will back door pass something.
He wrote this yesterday:
Paul "Judas" Ryan is hatching something behind closed doors. He is very good at treachery and betrayal.
Ask veterans who had their pensions stolen with his back door deal right before Christmas.
Old line republicans will wait until after they are re-elected before they sell us out to their pro-amnesty masters.
These people are too devious by half. But we recognize these tactics. they’ve used them on us before.
He’s doing the classic RINO dance. Pretend to be a conservative in an election year. When it’s all clear go back to being a RINO.
Must have been an interesting high school.
I am skeptical, perhaps cynical. They hold the American flag, now. But can they tell you who the first president was? And, what flag will they hold after they gain there legal status?
Mitch crawled out of his hole to say something. Ditch Mitch.
Well I sure hope they enjoyed their three day retreat on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Sounds nice, wish I could go. Are their offices in DC not suitable for such meetings?
Mitch, the Senate already passed IR, and you rolled over instead of fighting against it with a filibuster.
25 million Americans out of the workforce and you did nothing for them, you let them down.
Wages are sinking and hours are being cut, illegals are taking away jobs and depressing wages.
If you have a job its much more likely its a part time one.
Israel built a security fence, it has reduced infiltration by armed terrorists. A fence works, why don’t we build the fence that was already authorized by congress?
