Subway Takes Chemical Out of Sandwich Bread After Protest
ABC ^ | Susan Donaldson James

Subway said today it is removing a chemical used in yoga mats and shoe soles from the bread of it its popular sandwiches after a food blogger got more than 50,000 signatures in a petition drive.

"The complete conversion to have this product out of the bread will be done soon," Subway said in a statement. The company said the move had nothing to do with the protest and that it was "already in the process of removing azodicarbonamide as part of our bread improvement efforts."

But Vani Hari, the activist blogger who takes credit for the removal of yellow dyes in at least three of Kraft's Mac & Cheese products for children, was declaring victory after she had been researching the company's bread ingredients since 2012.

She is stupid. “If you cannot spell it or pronounce it.” I can do both but that is an ignorant reason to ban something. You see the chemicals that occur naturally in what we eat.

Another way of attaining the ‘elasticity’ this ingredient provides to the bread is accomplished by the quality of flour as well as longer sit times for the flour water mixture.

I ordered a veggie sub once and the veggies were so ‘thin’ it was essentially a lettuce sandwich. The clerk wasn’t very pleasant when I told her that I wanted more of “this” and more of “that”. I even had to tell her “still not enough” on some things. If I had not been standing there watching her, no telling what non-veggie substances would have ended up in the sandwich. She was SO surly, I didn’t go back to that store for years. A different store I went to after that had a guy who worked there who was great ..... never had a problem with what he made. Still, haven’t been to a Subway in some years and won’t ever be going back since they have aligned themselves with The Mooch.

azodiacarbonamide, a plastic-based additive

Its use in plastics is as a blowing agent, to produce bubbles, resulting in foamed plastics.

Another, very simple, blowing agent sometimes used in plastics is sodium hydrogen carbonate, another scary chemical name. Sodium hydrogen carbonate is sometimes sold by its stealth name, to fool the public, and is labeled "Baking Soda".

I demand that this insidious chemical be removed from ALL food products, IMMEDIATELY!

Bought french bread at a local bakery. It was excellent, taste, texture, superior to store bread in every way. The next day I decided to finish it and it was hard as concrete.

People want to remove things from food and then wonder why its tasteless, unappealing and gets moldy before you finish it. I too am wary of 'additives' but common sense applies.

Jersey Mikes stores are in a number of states, and put out a consistently good quality product, at least in the several stores I’ve visited. Local independent mom & pops vary in quality, but if they’re not pretty good they tend to not last long.

I just received the baguette tray I ordered and will be making my own sandwiches now. Getting hungry just thinking of it and I still have to go buy the yeast.

whenever i go to Subway (two days ago was the last time i was there) i ask for spinach instead of the shredded lettuce... usually my sandwich is full to where stuff falls out... that is one thing i do not like about Subway... the sandwiches are often messy... but i do ask for a lot of stuff: spinach, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, pickles... mayo (not lite) and mustard... plus the meat and cheese... then i add chips to it when i sit to eat it :)

to me, Jersey Mikes is on the expensive side... i like Togos (in California)... and here in Fayetteville there is a deli called Jason's Deli... it's good... and they have the best salad bar...

Eat at Jimmy John’s once, and you will never go back to Subway.

I've been on pure foods for over four years now. I can't stand the taste, smell, or texture of Subway's "food". What's despicable about them is that they hype themselves as a fresh food nutritional meal.

Finding bread that's edible is very difficult. Even Panera has only one or two 100% whole grain options.

Agree…

Thats used in Industrial manufacturing.

Its known to be found in streams, lakes, processed meats and vegetables and else ware.

It has been shown to be present in the systems of 99% of American humans, puppies and kittens.

Definitely should be banned… /sarc

I am hopeful that this measure will help Subway's sandwiches taste a little less like a yoga mat or a shoe sole.

A few days ago, Subway openly embraced Barack Obama and got on my boycott list.

Our daughter sent an email to my wife and several others on her email about that. They liked to go to Subway now and then for sandwiches. Not any more. They got her and our last $$s for a sandwich. The closest to us is almost 10 miles anyway, and we pass a local shop that has much better eats anyway.
