The Taliban claim to have captured a US dog of war
Telegragh (UK) ^ | 2-6-2014 | Rob Crilly

Posted on 02/06/2014 8:44:47 AM PST by Sir Napsalot

For years the Taliban have railed against infidel dogs who have invaded Afghanistan.

Now it seems they have caught one.

A video released by the Taliban’s cultural arm, al-Emara, pictures long-haired gunmen showing off the spoils of war.

They include weapons captured, they claimed, in an operation against American forces on December 23 as well as a subdued-looking canine on a chain. It wears the sort of shoulder harness used by working dogs.

(video at link)

“This dog was named after a colonel,” said one of the fighters. “It had a torch on it and its neck wore a GPS.”

Dogs are used extensively by coalition forces in Afghanistan. Some work sniffing out IEDs, weapons or drugs while others have a search and rescue role.

It is a dangerous job.

Last year it emerged that four dogs – two Labradors, a Springer spaniel cross and a Belgian shepherd – had died working alongside their Army handlers in Helmand since March 2011.

A spokesman for the Nato-led International Security Assistance force in Kabul said: “We are aware of the video. However, we have no operational reporting to confirm it.”

FWIW the first MWD killed in the Korean War was a German Shepherd named Leo. I saw his grave on a Marine base in Japan in 1962 and have never forgotten it.

“A spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force said: “We can confirm that a military working dog went mission following an ISAF missing in December, 2013. It is ISAF policy to defer identification to the appropriate national authorities.”

Pretty well confirms that this is true. He's prob a drug sniffer or IED hound but I can pretty much guarantee it's not an attack dog... Why ??? Cause they all have their hands

“I watched the Military Channel “Glory Hound”. And I dare any one not come away with tears running down their face.”

________________________________________________________

Shows like that are so touching; I was in tears after watching an episode of Pet Heroes that told the story of a Gander, a St. Bernard who, during the battle of Hong Kong, was attacking the Japanese who got close, sending them back (the Japanese called the huge dog the “black devil” or something like that). The dog also saw how the Canadian soldiers were throwing back any grenades lobbed at them.

At one point, none of the men, all injured, could reach a Japanese grenade. Gander took the grenade in his mouth and ran as fast as he could, over the hill towards the Japanese, killing himself and many opponents.

The dog had been adopted by a regiment of the Canadian Army stationed in Gander, NF. The Canadian War Museum and other groups worked to get the dog a posthumous medal for bravery in 2000, and his name is now engraved on the Veterans Memorial Wall in Ottawa (survivors of the battle insisted on that).

Long story short, on these and so many occasions, dogs truly demonstrate that they are “man’s best friend.”

What a sad story that you posted (and sorry for my lengthy response; I had to edit it!). I’m sure the handler of this missing dog is heartbroken. It appears the dog is too (”subdued”). I hope by some miracle he is returned.

Is that an exact quote? If so, then they need to fire both the author and anyone who was responsible for QA...

a military working dog went mission...

How does a dog go "mission"?

an ISAF missing

Not sure what that happens to be...

OMG, I just watched that video. Not one of the men have a smile on their face; some are actually waving their big machine guns at him, showing off how “brave” they are at catching an “infidel dog.” What pathetic, little “men.”

And then that poor dog clearly senses that something is horribly, horribly wrong. Had a group of people with a heart found the dog, its body language would have been very different—tail wagging, sniffing around curiously, perhaps even trying to get help returning to its pack. The dog is in the presence of evil.

“We shouldn’t be sending dogs or men over there”

What would have been your suggested course of action following 911 and Afghanistan harboring OBL?

Are you saying once we knocked the pee outta Afghanistan and chased OBL out of there then we should have left? If so, maybe I agree.

If you are flatly saying we never should have pursued the pig-scat pukes that were responsible for 911, then I disagree.

Only asking because your statement was rather sweeping.

A Springer spaniel called Theo hit the headlines when he died of a broken heart hours after his handler was killed. The 22-month-old dog suffered a fatal seizure when his handler, Lance Corporal Liam Tasker, 26, was shot dead by the Taliban in March 2011.

Absolutely.

Only a total moron would think you could drag a tribal islamic society as exists in Afghanistan and Iraq into a modern Democracy.

I think when dealing with these Islamic shiekdoms which screw with us we should attack them, kill them leaders, wreck their military infrastructure, and pull out. Minimal cost, minimal casualties, maximum chaos. Let their own damn Muslim brethern pick up the ashes and put everything back together again.

Its not our job. Bad enough we have to pay for the initial attack.

Bush II was an idiot and the only bigger idiot is the moron who succeeded him.

Exactly! It’s heartbreaking..

Even more heartbreaking are the countless videos I’ve seen of cops shooting down dogs who are showing nothing but submissiveness and shock as they are repeatedly pummeled with bullets until they are dead.

Way too many innocent pets are being murdered by cops.. Their only crimes were that they barked or got overly excited.

I have never seen anything as heart-wrenching in my life!

I made it through one show where a dog seemed to be pulled in to protect its handler. It was killed but the handler survived. He carried the cremains home.
Several years ago I talked to VN dog handlers. They loved their dogs and to that day shed tears about no dog surviving VN. They were deliberately destroyed. AS a dog lover I’m glad I didn’t get that specialty code.
