Senate Fails to Pass 3-Month Extension of Jobless Benefits

WASHINGTON — The Senate failed to move forward on a three-month extension of assistance for the long-term unemployed on Thursday, leaving it unlikely that Congress would approve the measure soon and dealing a setback to President Obama’s economic agenda.

The vote was 55-to-42, falling short of the 60-vote threshold to break a Republican filibuster effort.

Republicans and Democrats, many from the nation’s most economically depressed states, had been trying to reach a solution that would allow people who have exhausted their unemployment insurance to continue receiving benefits as long as the government offset the $6 billion cost.

Ultimately, how to pay for the program proved too big a hurdle for senators to overcome.

“We’ve given them everything they wanted. Paid for,” said Senator Harry Reid, the majority leader, flashing his irritation at Republicans who blocked the bill.

He said Democrats would keep pushing to extend the benefits, which expired at the end of last year, leaving more than 1.3 million Americans cut off. That number has since grown to more than 1.7 million.

I had an engineer apply for a job open I had. He was off 89 weeks. His resume looked great in my trash can.

I, for one, am glad they didn’t pass it!

I’m now unemployed just over 60 days...I’m working hard looking for another job!

Funny how our Chamber of Commerce worshiping GOP finds its druthers whenever the issue is individual unemployment benefits, mortgage defaults, welfare, subsidies, or bankruptcy..........but.......when it's “corporate” instead of “individual,” there's nary a “nay” vote cast when it comes to writing them checks or bailing them out.

If these guys had any courage or consistency, they'd be as strong in opposition when the Chamber demands the handouts as when individuals seek them.

Yep, that looks like the fate of the long term unemployed looking for jobs.

Your job ad should include something like this so that you won't get unecessary resumes:

You don't seem to read, there are no more extended benefits from the Feds. States do not give 99 weeks unemployment. My friend that is 64 and unemployed, and unlikely to get employed will get 26 weeks from Taxifornia. The EDD has been very helpful, they told him to take early retirement. Aside from the reduced benefits(significant, he's not ready to settle into that rocker.

Month after month my neighbor told me he could not find a job. One day he invited me over for dinner, I thought it was to celebrate his finding of a new job as we had some of the biggest and best steaks I had in years. After dinner he told me he still was not working but had bought the steaks with his food stamps/independence card. I was sick to my stomach as he told me the good thing about being unemployed was that he had more time to work on his boat. His unemployment FINALLY ran out after what seemed like well over a year...and 7 days later he magically found a job where he is still working today.

Really, this is just a benefit to the 1.3 or 1.7 million, or whatever the number is. They are just choosing to not work. Just another benefit of ObamaCare.

How well you know me, eh? Who the hell are you to make such a demeaning blanket statement? Wow, if only I had realized that the reason I don't have a job is I just choose not to. Enlighten me as to where you got your degree in Sociology and Psychology, enquiring minds want to know.

It takes a certified idiot to propose making illegal aliens citizens while paying people to not work. Where do these idiots think the money comes from? The people that are willing to get off their rear ends and work everyday, that’s where.

“But Obama justr said a week ago that the economy and the state of the union are STRONG! Why do we, then, need an emergency unemployment benefits extension of three months?”

I, also, would like a clear explanation for this question. Maybe a reporter can ask Poindexter(Carney) about it.
