ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) - An 18-year-old has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for throwing a punch in a St. Cloud alley that killed a college student.
Jesse Smithers of Sauk Rapids earlier pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of 20-year-old Colton Gleason.

Smithers apologized for what he called a “complete accident.”
Smithers was accused of jumping out of a car on Sept. 20, 2012, and punching Colton Gleason once in the face.
How the hell is jumping out of a car and punching a man in the face a ‘complete accident’?

I don’t know how much of the ten years the dude will serve, but if it’s a substantial amount, I’m OK with this. It’s a homicide rap, he’s going to prison. Maybe it ought to be longer, but it’s no slap on the wrist either.
Several years ago a dear one of mine was held and battered for hours and almost killed. It actually was attempted murder but they charged him with aggravated battery. When I asked the prosecutor he said that the amount of time would be about the same. Sad but at least he was sentenced to 10 although he’ll probably get out in 6-7.

And by the time he gets out of prison his butt will be just as loose as Barry's in those mom jeans he wears.
The headline makes it sound like an outrage..like it was a fight among college kids and one of them just happened to die. Really covers up the real crime.

It’s so pointless to fight. If you win you could kill the guy or someone else. It’s just not worth it to keep from being seen as less than a man.
Sometimes you can’t avoid it, and I realize that, but folks get hot-headed at parties and social gatherings and it never turns out well.

I don’t honestly know. I met Steve a few years after his brother Eric was killed and Steve’s wife told me about it. I’m too well raised to ask her or him for more details but I’ll bet the guy is out and a about already.
And that “affluenza” kid in TX who took Valium and was drunk on beer stolen from Walmart killed 4 people and sent to others to the hospital for the rest of their lives got off with nothing but a trip to a Hollywood style treatment center for massages and horseback riding.
