Here’s what should have been done.
15 la go Vegas is often a parking lot. Especially weekends. Once people get to Vegas they can easily do without a car.
A high speed from Burbank to Barstow and one from Ontario to Barstow. 1 stop each, Palmdale and Victorville.
Lines converge and one line go Vegas with a stop in state line.
The governor of cal should go to Nevada and meet with mayor of Vegas, Nevada gov, and casino owners. $5 a night room tax to fund the line and supplement operations, if necessary.
Only public funds, review plans, inspect, review environmental report, provide fight away.
Gambling available on the trains.

Of course there is. I’m not trying to pick a fight, I just prefer posts that provide information, that reproduce the salient facts from the first two or three paragraphs of the article. The law ( and it was one awful proposition that should NEVER have passed) is VERY specific. Now J. Brown wants to pull an O and make it the way he wants it.
This supposed high speed rail will never run as ‘advertised’ nor will it carry the number of passengers touted. Another California boondoggle that will require government bail outs
The part they’re planning to start with parallels the fault for its entire length. They’re building a hunk in the central valley that starts just outside of nowhere, and stops about 40 miles south of there. It’ll make that notorious Alaska bridge look well thought out.
(Bakersfield is a two-hour drive Madera, the precise middle of nowhere.)
Taking the train (counting parking, ticketing, security, a reasonable wait, luggage handling, car rental on one end) would be (I estimate conservatively) to be more than three hours; One hour longer than driving (and that's assuming that the train would not be late -- but it will always be late, that is the definition of a train trip).
The cost? Even heavily subsidized, I guestimate the train cost to be $50 or more per person, or $200 for a family of 4 traveling from Bakersfield to Madera (but that's one way, and does not include a rental.)
So, let's add all these up, shall we.?
1. Almost no Californians have "Bakersfield to Madera" as a travel itinerary.
1.a. And in the extraordinarily rare case that someone might be traveling between these two destinations, the odds against traveling from one station to another without needing car transport at either end are impossibly long.
2. If anyone did want to travel between these two towns, they almost certainly will want to go on their own schedule in an easy a two-hour private car ride. Thus, they would NOT want to wait for a train, for an estimated (by non-expert me) for a three-hour trip. A private car would be more convenient, even if it was a rental driven between the two stations.
3. The ticket cost will be likely be too high, I suspect much higher than driving costs. How could it be anything less, considering the scores of billions of dollars spent? Someone will do the precise math, but I'm guessing that the total fixed costs of construction and operation, per ticketed passenger for the first five years might be well into the thousands, possibly tens of thousands. (Just a guess, assuming cost over-runs and rider avoidance.)
4. I suspect that the number of promised jobs for any part of the program will fall pitifully short.
Like all government enterprises, this will be a hopeless failure, from beginning to end.

Only problem is the rest of the country is starting to get jealous of the income they can make from degenerate gambling, even more broken families, and of course the increase in crime to fund their habit. So Casinos are popping up everywhere.
Yea, but they are already trying to run out the clock on busy work money spent, so they can start with the “well, we already spent this much, we can’t stop now!”
The road to Vegas remains he’s illy travelled.
