House GOP leaders are working on a compromise budget deficit plan that would trade raising the debt limit in return for the restoration of military pension cuts, The Washington Post reports.
Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor need to cobble together a 218-vote majority and hope tying the debt limit to the military pension cut can bring together enough votes from both sides of the aisle.
But the Republican leaders are unlikely to come up with any debt proposal that could win a majority solely from the GOP side of the aisle, according to the Post.
Tea party-leaning Republicans would rather offset a rise in the debt ceiling with across-the-board reductions in entitlements. Democrats are pushing for a no-strings-attached "clean" vote on the debt ceiling.
Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, a former chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee, said "Obviously, we should honor our commitment to our veterans, but let's do that in a separate bill and find savings elsewhere. I don't think we should tie it to the debt ceiling…"
If Boehner is unable to make a package deal work he may push through a clean debt-ceiling bill with no strings attached, the Los Angeles Times reported.
A plan that would reduce cost-of-living pension increases for younger retired service members is part of a deal reached by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan and Senate Budget Committee Chairman Patty Murray. Restoring the cuts would cost about $7 billion, according to the Post.

This idiot Boehner first rams through a bill cutting these benefits now throws away the only leverage he has in order to restore them??
We need a new House leader and a new GOP Congress.
At this point in the game, conservatives should simply ignore Boehner. There is no point in even acknowledging him or the rest of the leadership in any way.
Boehner should return to private life and Mull over his belly button awhile. Seems all he ever does is mull over those things he should be actively pushing. And then those things that should be mulled over and discarded are pushed for passage...
Well I told everyone to calm down about the Retirees reduced COLA percent. I KNEW that it would never happen. The only thing I missed was that I didn’t think it would be potentially fixed so quickly. I wonder when FREEPERS are going to start listening to me and my wisdom....HAHA!!!!
Just out of curiosity does the plan include any offsets that will fund the restoration of the pension cuts?
I like the benefit cuts. Have you seen the what the generals do in retirement ?
I am ok with restoring the cuts to the low level soldiers but the generals live in what most of us would call luxury and most of the generals have not been seriously wounded either.

You totally missed the point. it was not about restoring a wrong in benefit cuts.
He is raising spending once again by agreeing to debt limit hike.
What does he get for it? Changing a law which he himself rammed through Congress.
This is like paying a guy $1000 for a loaf of bread, then getting him to not harm your children by paying him back $1000 and getting the bread back.
Just shoot the guy if he harms your kids, don’t buy back a stupid action on your part.

The mighty Republicans. No, they’re not commies—not at all. It starts with the local-yocal Republicans and their regulations against private property and new, small business on private property at home.
Indeed. But otherwise, don’t care. At the end of the day, he will do what he wants. Tacit consent from members of Congress tell him there is no real opposition to crap that will make it difficult for them to be reelected.
By absolutely ignoring him, he will have to take time from cramming immigration to answering questions as to why most of his caucus don’t even talk to him.
