Elizabeth mom admitted assaulting 2-year-old who later died, police say

ELIZABETH — A woman arrested after the death of her 2-year-old daughter gave a statement to police admitting she injured the child, a judge said today while reading from the court complaint today.

Raquel Ramirez, 30, of Elizabeth, is accused of biting her daughter, Dayanna Oroczo, on the stomach and beating the child, Judge Joan Robinson Gross said during a brief court hearing.

Dressed in jail issued shirt and pants, and with her hands cuffed in front of her, Ramirez listened as Gross read from court papers that said police based their complaint on Ramirez' "own admission" of injuring the child.She faces one count of aggravated assault on accusations that she bit the child and a second charge of endangering the welfare of a child for allegedly striking the victim repeatedly. The complaint did not say if she used her hand or an object to strike the child. If convicted on those charges, she faces 15 years in prison.

Ramirez came to court today for the first time since her arrest Feb. 3. A Mexican citizen, she heard the court proceeding through an interpreter, who translated the judge's statements.
