'Wilding' youths overwhelmed deputies at state fair

TAMPA — An atmosphere of family fun at the Florida State Fair was trampled Friday night by a crowd of young people carrying out an annual practice known as wilding, sheriff’s investigators said.

By the end of the night, the fair closed early and one teenager among the 99 people ejected for disorderly conduct was killed — hit by a sport utility vehicle as he tried to cross Interstate 4.

Twelve people were arrested on charges including trespassing and fighting.

Now, authorities are considering possible changes in fair policy, including limiting the hours when young people are admitted free to the fair on its first Friday, “Student Day.”

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, which provides fair security, planned for the annual stampede but deputies quickly became overwhelmed as a small group of running teens swelled to hundreds of people running and pushing everyone and everything in their path, Sheriff’s Col. Jim Previtera said.

The department based its planning on last year’s lower levels of violence. Similar outbreaks have been made headlines before nationwide, including an August 2011 incident on opening day of the Wisconsin State Fair.

He was entitled. He was of the protected class. He could do anything he pleased, when he pleased, and where he pleased. He decided he wanted to cross the road, he was entitled. Woe to anything, any one that tries to deny him.

Trip a few in the lead. Let the trampling teach the little darlings a valuable lesson. Nothing hammers home a lesson like living through the consequences of your foolish acts.

An atmosphere of family fun

For a certain segment of the population running wild, attacking innocent people and causing mayhem is family fun. I bet when those "youths" got home the sit around the dinner table a laugh about it. The family is always there the defend the little assailants in court and in front of the cameras.

We aren't up against a few misguided kids or outlaw gangs. We face a hostile, alien culture right in our midst.

My mom lives in Roanoke VA and they have had the same problem there. The gang wannabes have decided that the fair is the place to hold an annual throw down. Sad to se, but Roanoke has a sordid struggle with forced desegregation, school bussing, and a declining section of town that is going full on ghetto.

You CAN carry concealed at the Texas state fair!

I highly doubt this will occur there.

Also, there is a heavy police presence.

I can remember lots of problems for the last forty years with youths at fairs.

If memory serves me correct, all the problems originated from ONE specific racial group.

No. The “youths” were “predominately african-American? How can this be? Obviously, the reporters are racists.

That stretch of I-4 is big and massively busy. Thank you Darwin for culling the herd.

Of the 99 people ejected from the midway and 12 others arrested, Bay News 9 asked for a breakdown of age and race.

We are still waiting to hear back from the Sheriff’s Office for those numbers.

Don't need to hear back. The lack of response tells us the demographics of the "teens".

Agree - Let them run and blow off steam... maybe more of them can run into traffic or run into a baseball bat to the face...
