Skip to comments. For N.F.L. Prospect Michael Sam, Upbringing Was Bigger Challenge Than Coming Out as Gay
Posted on 02/11/2014 12:51:23 PM PST by Second Amendment First
COLUMBIA, Mo. Michael Sam was the loud country boy who wore a tank top and a cowboy hat. He was the smooth-singing baritone who could irritate his coaches and crack up his teammates with his improvised songs.
He was one of the best players to come out of tiny Hitchcock, Tex., where his family was well known for all the wrong reasons. He was an all-American and defensive terror on the football field. He was a regular at the gay club where the bartenders knew him by name.
Sam introduced himself to the world Sunday night as an N.F.L. prospect who just happens to be gay. Now, he is poised to become a trailblazer in a violent and macho world that will scrutinize his every action and turn his private life into a very public debate. Related Coverage
But Sam has never had it easy. He grew up about 40 miles southeast of Houston near Galveston Bay in Texas, the seventh of eight children. Three of his siblings have died and two brothers are in prison. He lived briefly in the back seat of his mothers car, and his relationship with his family remains complicated: when he visits home, he usually stays with friends.
But to get a sense of the challenges awaiting Sam, look no further than his father.
Last Tuesday, Michael Sam Sr. was at a Dennys near his home outside Dallas to celebrate his birthday when his son sent him a text message.
Dad, Im gay, he wrote.
The party stopped cold. I couldnt eat no more, so I went to Applebees to have drinks, Sam Sr. said. I dont want my grandkids raised in that kind of environment.

He didn’t like the way he was reared?
"Only two things come out of Texas...."
Time to stop watch the NFL if he’s drafted.
High school, college, graduate school, wife, job, house, cars, vacations, being overweight, feeling bad about my job, anything at all. I just let the folks at the White Guy Club know about my distress, and they took care of it for me.
Thanks, White Guy Club!
He is a Louisiana fruit who didn’t make it all the way to California.
I guess he can always play wide receiver for the San Francisco Fudge Packers.
“Steers and ...”
R. Lee Ermey in Platoon
White Loan Officer: Uh, Harry, why don't you, uh, take your break now? I'll take care of.. uh.. Mr. White.
Loan Officer: Well.. okay. Thanks, Bob. [ exits ]
White Loan Officer: [ laughs, then sits ] That was a close one, wasn't it?
Eddie Murphy: It certainly was.
White Loan Officer: We don't have to bother with these formalities, do we, Mr. White? Huh?
Eddie Murphy: What a silly Negro!
White Loan Officer: Just take what you want, Mr. White. Pay us back anytime. Or don't. We don't care.
Why's that? It's not like some team is going to draft him because he's gay. No NFL team would waste a precious early-round draft pick on a publicity stunt like that. He'll only be drafted if a team believes he fits a need for that team - and, as a top-ranked defensive lineman, I'm sure there are several teams who could use his services.
If they really would go out, I'd be very happy.
I’ll bet he’s all “lawyered up” waiting for any team to turn him down. It’s disgusting that we even had to know that this guy was a sexual pervert much less to see him being praised for his “strength” and “heroism” for coming “out.” He’s a disgusting pervert and I wish him the worst.
When will this crap stop?
Another college changing people for the worst.
Steers and queers LOL!
Eddie Murphy’s gay Mr T skit would fit well here.
I am curious as to how his little announcement is going to affect his draft status. If I were an NFL coach, I think I would want to steer clear of someone looking for this kind of publicity at this point in his “professional career”, just for the sake of avoiding potential drama. If he ends up being picked very late, the enter LGBT or whatever it is called will have a new target for demonizing.
“Im old-school, he added. Im a man and a woman type of guy. As evidence, he pointed out that he had taken an older son to Mexico to lose his virginity.”
Yeah, why that dad is a paragon of virtue! Gets a hooker for his son! A Mexican hooker, lucky his son didn’t get aids.
“Hey boy, you look mighty cute in them jeans....”
That’s racist! An African-American prostitute in their own neighborhood wasn’t good enough for him?
Sometime soon, all the teams' management will get together to decide who HAS to draft him.
Somebody has to, and this guy has just ratcheted-up the pressure on that team and himself. For what purpose, I just don't know.
Oh yeah, a real American HERO.
NFL teams exist to make money, not win games. The two often coincide, but not always.
In this case, I think the teams wouldn’t much care either way, but the NFL badly, badly wants an openly gay player.
I think the profit margin on pushing the gay angle is about zero, or less.
Hey, there Bro! [Secret White Boy Club handshake] I didn’t know you were a member!
I haven’t seen you at any of the Oppressors Lodge meetings. Or are you more of an Imperialist Racist Sexist Homophobe kinda guy? Are you going to the national Privilege rally this spring? I can have my Lear Jet pick you up.
And remember, the Feds have the “Sword of Damocles” hanging over the NFL in the form of the Antitrust Exemption.
I contrast this coverage to what they did to Tim Tebow. I wonder what will happen if he goes undrafted?
Funny,I dont see any horns on him,,,
I being gay is really normal - why do they make such a fuss about it?
“When will this crap stop?’
When conservatives get control of the media.
I heard a sports guy say last night that this guy is a bit undersized for the way the position is played in the NFL. Imagine the army of lawyers coming after you if you draft this guy but cut him at the end of preseason.
NYT all homosexual all the time.
“Time to stop watch the NFL if hes drafted.”
No doubt about that.
And not to mention the exclusion of Tim Tebow from a starting QB jib in the NFL.
The denial of Rush Limbaugh’s right to own an NFL team.
The inclusion of the multicultural Coke ad that promotes homosexual marriage.
And finally, a homosexual in the NFL who our children will have to watch, his teammates that will be forced to undress in front of him and opposing QB’s will have to suffer the threat and humiliation of being sacked by Sam.
“Roger Goodell’s gay brother calls Michael Sam an ‘instant hero’”
Looks like this is going to be put on the fast track.
Rumors of the NFL’s demise are NOT exaggerated.
they would and will if they need viewers. It is all about filling the stadium. Some idiot from NYC or SF will “advise” this would be a ratings move without realizing the vast majority would find it repulsive and be a death sentence for a team.
low taxes are good for business but look at the idiots in DC.
He did this in an attempt to guarantee to be drafted. If no one drafts him he will cry “prejudice and hate” towards gays.
“Some idiot from NYC or SF will advise this would be a ratings move without realizing the vast majority would find it repulsive and be a death sentence for a team.”
It will not only be a death sentence to the team who drafts him as the vast majority of season ticket holders return their tickets in protest, but it will be the death nail of the entire NFL as each team that Sam’s team plays will have dozens of players who will refuse to suit up for that game and millions of fans across the nation will refuse to watch any game Sam plays in.
time to remove their tax protected status.
We’re to trust the judgment of a person who announces publicly that he plays with poop?
The homo is a “lose” proposition. If you put him on your team, you’ll never be able to get rid of him without involving lots of lawyer time. Obviously, he already has an attitude problem, coming-out like and when he did. FAIL.
the NYT is puffing him up to this end.
This must be part of the the protect hitlary effort for 2016.
Do you really believe any of that will happen? I will lay a bet that the number of season tickets turned in by the team that drafts him will be less than 1,000, and ratings will drop by less than 1% if at all.
Not saying it would be a good idea to draft him, but most people just don't care. The big problem for the team who drafts him is they are getting an undersized, old (24 year old) defensive lineman who is probably too slow to play LB in a 3-4 defense. And when they finally decide he isn't working out, they can't cut him because of the outcry that will come from the left. Kind of like the outcry that came from the right when a poor passing QB can't find a spot in the league.
I remember an interview with NFL great Bubba Smith. He was asked if there were gays in the NFL. He said “sure there were.” Asked how he knew they were gay, he said “they were the ones with a hard-on in the shower!”
His performance in the Senior Bowl and practices had dropped him from 2nd -3rd round to 4th - 6th round. This smacks of desperation to either move up in the draft or get paid reparations.
or his father found out and threw him out.
