Oklahoma Congressman(R): Washington Redskins On 'Wrong Side Of History'
AP ^ | 2/11/14

ASHBURN, Virginia -

The latest back-and-forth over the Washington Redskins name includes a stern letter from two lawmakers and a new "community voices" campaign from the team.

A letter sent Monday from Congressman Tom Cole [R-Oklahoma] and Senator Maria Cantwell [D-Washington], tells NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell that the league is on "the wrong side of history" and mentions the league's tax-exempt status.

Cantwell chairs the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. Cole is a member of the Chickasaw Nation.

The lawmakers specifically objected to Goodell's Super Bowl week news conference, when he said the Redskins name has been "presented in a way that honors Native Americans."

Really, Republican Cong.Cole?

There is a $17 trillion debt, and you are worried about a NFL teams name.

what’s with liberals saying their opponents are on the wrong side of history on various issues? Is this just another Alinsky tactic to shut down/shout down debate and discussion of issues?????

I’m in Oklahoma, but fortunately he’s not my congressman. This stupidity is liable to get him a nice challenge in the primary... in this state.

Yes, they carp this inane slogan incessantly, as if there are only two "sides" to history.

I always ask in response if they think that any nation is eternal. Isn't there always a demise and fall of every nation? I then ask them where they think our country is, considering the horrific stats on crime, corruption, decline in real learning, and loss of all principle.

Again, who is on the right side of history?

Every day when I think I can’t hear more idiocy out of Congress, along comes the Democrats with something new. And if they don’t have something, then the Republicans can find something.

Is there any chance we’re all dreaming and this stuff isn’t real?

With the unfunded liabilities, the debt actually exceeds $120 Trillion dollars.

Well, of course not.

Ol’ Chickasaw Tom is ignorant of history. The Redskins were once the Boston Braves. They were renamed the Redskins to honor their coach, Willie “Lone Star” Dietz, a Sioux, a graduate of the Carlisle Indian School and a former teammate of Jim Thorpe. Why isn’t Tom standing in solidarity with Willie?

Something else the Congressman has forgotten: The name of the state he represents, Oklahoma, is derived from the Choctaw words for "red people."

Glass houses, throwing stones, and all that.

Football is a kids game, if Mr. Cole doesn’t like the name of the team and spoils the enjoyment of it for him, he doesn’t have to go to the games.

The country faces a lot of problems, the nicknames of ball teams doesn’t meet the list of priorities.

This isn’t a good sign for the GOP to be involved in this, what year did Sen. Specter look to open up Senate hearing to determine if the New England team was cheating?

Heh.

From wikipedia:

"The name Oklahoma comes from the Choctaw phrase okla humma, literally meaning red people. Choctaw Chief Allen Wright suggested the name in 1866 during treaty negotiations with the federal government regarding the use of Indian Territory, in which he envisioned an all-Indian state controlled by the United States Superintendent of Indian Affairs." They should make a deal.

They draft the fag from Missouri and they keep the Redskins name.

“Choctaw Chief Allen Wright”

Looks like Indians began taking Anglo-Saxon names long before the present age.

Much easier to say than Walking-Eagle-Who-Dances-with-Wolves or whatever.

On going high unemployment, Unaffordable Affordable healthcare, troops dying in Afghanistan with no plan in place that make sense, over 17 trillion dollars of debt and again reaching the debt ceiling and you have time to worry about an NFL teams name? You should be fired!

Yes, the Redskins are on the wrong side of history, but not for the reason the author thinks. They should have taken Andrew Luck in the draft instead of RG III.
