Britain's 100 years of conflict
The Guardian ^ | February 12th 2014 | Ewan MacAskill, Ian Cobain

Posted on 02/12/2014 8:35:38 AM PST by Winniesboy

British forces are set to withdraw from Afghanistan by the end of 2014. If 2015 is a year of peace for the UK, it will be the first for at least 100 years. Here the Guardian charts every conflict in which British forces have engaged since 1914... No other country, even those with similarly militaristic traditions, has been engaged continuously over such a long span... The timeline of constant combat may stretch even further back, given Britain's imperial engagements, all the way to the creation of the British army in 1707.

Afghanistan....is where big, powerful nations go to die! Britain, USSR, USA, who’s next? China?

The timeline also shows several marked gaps in the supposed ‘100 years of war’.

I don’t think there are any gaps - conflicts begun in previous years simply continue...

I think the Chinese might actually succeed in conquering Afghanistan. They’re not hampered by any concept of humanity. They have an Eastern mentality and have a grip on the subtleties that we keep missing out on.

The timeline at the top shows otherwise.

20s, 30s, late , 80s, etc

Poorly done timeline, I suppose.

Whether they realize it or not, radical Islam is at war with them (and all the West) now, and will continue until this enemy (radical Islam in all its forms)is eradicated, or Christianity and Israel cease to exist, IMO.

If you click on the particular conflict box, a yellow band appears at the top to show how long it continued. Thus ‘Southern Iraq’ in 1919 continued to 1932; ‘China’ in 1927 continues to 1939 etc.

The mongols did pretty good with that. They were willing to just kill everyone.

The problem with trying to pacify Afghanistan is that the rebels can just retreat to the "tribal areas" of neighboring Pakistan, and then come back to hit you when they feel ready.

I think if Pakistan had a choice between choosing to shelter tribes that would attack the Chinese, I think Pakistan would choose the side of the Chinese.

Yes, China could probably roll over Pakistan. And if Pakistan used one of their nukes, China would terminate Pakistan’s existence.

I sincerely hope the Chinese are never provoked to mobilization. We don’t need a militarily active Chinese right now discovering their strengths and weaknesses and improving on those weaknesses.

China's big weakness right now, is that they have no active-duty military who have actual combat experience. The last time they had a real war with anybody was when they fought us in Korea, plus a short war with Vietnam in 1979, but even their Vietnam veterans would be old now.

Exactly; lets hope they remain untested.
