New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter says he will retire after this season.

In a lengthy letter posted Wednesday on his Facebook account, Jeter, 39, started by thanking his fans and supporters throughout his career. He also referenced a "bunch of injuries" that had him sidelined for much of last season.

"And this is, I could not be more sure," Jeter wrote. "I know it in my heart. The 2014 season will be my last year playing professional baseball."

Hope it’s a good one for him. Two years ago was one of his best years. He never got over the off-season surgery last year. I’d like to see him go out strong.

He's fun to watch. Even in his prime, he was not nearly as smooth as Ozzie Smith at shortstop, but maybe the closest thing since Ray Oyler.

Anybody remember Ray Oyler? He couldn't hit, but man was he ever a vacuum cleaner at shortstop!

I used to be irritated by Jeter's ego. But that was before A-Rod knocked him off the annoying oversized ego list.

As a Yankee fan, I knew this day was coming soon but it still makes me sad. I’m 45 and he’s one of the best Yankees in my lifetime.

Actually, didn't that happen in 2010?

Does he still give out autographed baseballs to every chick he taps? Please, I could care less about this idiot. Remember the college kid who caught his 3000 ball and Jeter brought him into a back room and made him give it up in exchange for a few tee shirts? Meanwhile the kid was $100k in debt for student loans. What a guy.

I’m making this same pronouncement about my 11 year old son.

LOL.

We Baltimoreans know a thing or 2 about shortstops who can’t hit: Mark Belanger AKA the Blade.

I remember Ray Oyler. He was such a poor hitter the Tigers moved Mickey Stanley from centerfield to shortstop for the 1968 World Series

Ray Oyler was typical of shortstops in that era. Their glove was more important than their bat. As a Phillies fan, we had Terry Harmon and Bobby Wine, who were lousy hitters. In the 80s we had Steve Jeltz, who took lousy hitting to a whole new level.

I hate the Yankees, but love Jeter.

He’s a class act (mostly) and a great player.

The Yankees have the best defensive shortstop in baseball, Brendan Ryan. He’s barely a .200 hitter.

That is not his friend anymore. Jeter is too old for her. He needs to find a nice women who can make babies no Hollywood women just a normal one.

I remember Belanger. His lifetime average of .228 wasn’t so bad for a shortstop of that era. Oyler? I think his lifetime was about .175, still roughly 40 points higher than that 1968 year when the Tigers went all the way.

The only shortstop I remember who went from a lousy hitter to a good one was Omar Vizquel. Great on defense, terrible hitter until he came to Cleveland.

Belanger had 2 seasons over 270 which raised his anemic avg to the paltry 228 lifetime.

Loved him though.
