Poll: Thumbs down on Vladimir Putin, Russia

With all eyes on Sochi for the Winter Olympics, Americans hold the lowest view of Russia and its president that they’ve had in two decades, according to a new poll. Sixty percent of Americans view Russia unfavorably, the most since 1994, according to Gallup’s poll out Thursday. Their favorable view of Russia nearly ties the low set in 1999 during the bombing in Chechnya and conflict in Kosovo: Today, just 34 percent of Americans view Russia favorably, near the 33 percent set in 1999.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also registered his lowest marks since first becoming president in 1999, per Gallup’s polling. Americans view Putin unfavorably 63 percent to 19 percent, continuing a trend that has grown since Gallup began polling on the Russian leader.

The low view of Russia follows a fall poll from Gallup that found Americans consider Russia an enemy rather than ally for the first time in 14 years, the culmination of a souring relationship between the two nations that has involved Russia harboring National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, opposite positions on Iran and Syria, anti-gay laws that worried Americans about crackdowns during the Olympics and a publicly frosty relationship between President Barack Obama and Putin.

I wish I had your confidence that Obama would be gone at the end of this term. When has he ever followed the Constitution? If he comes up with some reason why he needs to stay in office, what would happen?

Do you think he will fill out his term?

There may be others that decide his tyranny must be ended

We had to practice hiding under our desks during the Russian missile crisis. I grew up in South Florida. We were taught the Soviet Union was our mortal enemy. I am reading a book Putin’s Russia. Russia has a history of horrible corruption. Not sure today’s America is much better.

You think someone trusting the opinion of their own circle of friends over some media driven poll numbers is funny?

Aren’t you special..

Russia is Russia. The KGB (comparable to our CIA was part of that world. It is a very old country with a lot of culture. It went through a lot....and has evolved into a "new country" thanks to the leadership of Putin. It was an uphill climb.

As far as I can see, the USA has now spiraled to a new low....murdering babies,

Remember, we were allies at one time. We suffered together.

It’s been five years of tyranny. Seems everybody who could do anything is okay with it.

Getting weary of the GOPES (gop elite snobs) re-lying on B/S polls offered by the political opposition. Think any Russian gives a damm or believes what’s comming out of Politico ? This poll is for Demo-Com consumption to disguise the screwups in foreign policy.

Russia has a long and complicated history. We don’t. Perhaps we will end up being a flash in the pan in history. Not sure America can survive Obama and his henchmen/women.

I think people admire Putin because even though he is a thug and a gangster, you can tell by watching him at the Olympics that he truly LOVES HIS COUNTRY and the competitors that represent Russia. No matter what his past KGB associations, you can tell he is proud of the athletes, and proud of his country. He also acts like a man, instead of a sissy boy. Therefore, he is respected by most people.

I often hear this repeated on FR. There is no way he stays in power. That’s ridiculous. In a way it would almost be a good thing if he tried it. That would finally be the last straw and rebellion would begin.

I’m sure Castro loves his country too. So did Hugo Chavez. Did anyone love their country more than Ronald Reagan as president? He loved it so much that he couldn’t imagine staying one second longer than his natural term. Putin is a megalomaniac

"He also acts like a man, instead of a sissy boy. Therefore, he is respected by most people."

There you have it.

Regardless of Obama's motives being as pure as the wind driven snow, I despise him because he's a wimp.

We were only Allies because we knew the Russians would slaughter more Nazis ( and Russians) than us.

That Alliance did not last long after May 1945.

Putin doesn’t play nice with the globalists. He is thorn in their side. Europe wants to go one direction (homosexuality, political correctness, one world currency) and he stands in the way. Viva Putin

One hears that term a lot around here, “globalist.” It means whatever someone wants it to mean. Funny thing is, Putin is a “globalist” under many of its definitions.
