Cruz (Lee) bill stops Obama from 'forcing' gay marriage onto states

Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) introduced a bill Thursday to ensure states don’t have to adhere to the federal definition of “marriage” and “spouse.”

S. 2024, the State Marriage Defense Act, would require that the federal government give the same deference to the 33 states that define marriage as the union between one man and one woman as it does to the 17 states that recognize same-sex unions.

“Under President Obama, the federal government has tried to re-define marriage, and to undermine the constitutional authority of each state to define marriage consistent with the values of its citizens,” Cruz said Friday. “The Obama administration should not be trying to force gay marriage on all 50 states.” Cruz and Lee said Obama should respect states’ rights to define marriage, rather than it being “dictated from Washington.”

“I support traditional marriage,” Cruz said. “This bill will safeguard the ability of states to preserve traditional marriage for its residents.”

The Supreme Court recently struck down provisions of the Defense of Marriage Act, saying it was discrimination for the federal government to not recognize gay marriages that are legal within some states. Although the court decision allows states to still determine whether to recognize same-sex marriage, Cruz and Lee said the administration is using the ruling to “force” a same-sex marriage agenda.

“It is clear the Obama administration finds the principles of federalism inconvenient in its effort to force states to redefine the institution of marriage,” Lee said. “The State Marriage Defense Act provides an important protection for states, respecting the right to choose for themselves how each will treat the institution of marriage under the law.”

Supporters of gay marriage argue that its a human rights issue and that everyone should have the right to get married. .

States are not laboratories for trying to redefine nature.

Ok...good. How do we stop the courts from doing the same? That’s the REAL problem!

Nit picking here for sure, but the thing that's wrong with saying "I support traditional marriage" is the unsaid implication that there's any kind EXCEPT marriage between one man and one woman. There isn't any other kind of marriage.

Exactly! I love what Cruz is doing and am behind him 100 percent. I hope he bears in mind:

Some "social conservatives" approach it from a limited government standpoint, and understand that LIMITING government to prevent it from punishing a baker who refuses to bake a cake for a gay couple, or punishing the private owners of a hall who refuse to rent out for a "gay" marriage, or punishing employers, adoption agencies, landlords, or any other private entity for not going along with the pretend "marriage" of two homosexuals -- that limiting government from doing that kind of punishing, is the right and MORAL path.

It's frustrating that there are "social conservatives" who want to make gay marriage "illegal." That is like making unicorns illegal.

The better solution is make it illegal for anyone to punish people who peacefully, civilly, politely tell open homosexuals, "Go somewhere else."

Well said. And I knew I could count on you to say it. Hope you're well.

Does that mean it is ok if the gay marriage issue is left to the states and so states like MA, NY and CA decide they are going to go ahead and have gay marriage while the states with traditional values decide to vote it down? I just want to know, would that be ok around here?

Cruz and Lee are the best. Few others in the senate can be trusted to take a stand against perversion.

“What next? Will the degenerates want to push marrying their dog, cat or goat?”

Yup. You can bet on it. Incest, bestiality...the depravity of liberals is limitless.

True that.

My question was of the rhetorical nature.

My point is that the powers not granted to the federal government in the Constitution are left up to the states. That is basically what the 10th says. As for gay “marriage”, a state can recognize any fantasy they want, and other states can’t, but the feds do not have the right to force this on the states.
Cruz is the ONLY one standing up to the federal government’s end run around the laws of the land.

My wife has been really turned off when it comes to all politicians. Tonight she sent an email to Cruz thanking him and asking him to hang in and keep fighting for us.

The groundwork is already being laid for those things to be demanded at a future date, sadly.
