Skip to comments.Cruz (Lee) bill stops Obama from 'forcing' gay marriage onto states

Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) introduced a bill Thursday to ensure states dont have to adhere to the federal definition of marriage and spouse.
S. 2024, the State Marriage Defense Act, would require that the federal government give the same deference to the 33 states that define marriage as the union between one man and one woman as it does to the 17 states that recognize same-sex unions.
Under President Obama, the federal government has tried to re-define marriage, and to undermine the constitutional authority of each state to define marriage consistent with the values of its citizens, Cruz said Friday. The Obama administration should not be trying to force gay marriage on all 50 states. Cruz and Lee said Obama should respect states rights to define marriage, rather than it being dictated from Washington.
I support traditional marriage, Cruz said. This bill will safeguard the ability of states to preserve traditional marriage for its residents.
The Supreme Court recently struck down provisions of the Defense of Marriage Act, saying it was discrimination for the federal government to not recognize gay marriages that are legal within some states. Although the court decision allows states to still determine whether to recognize same-sex marriage, Cruz and Lee said the administration is using the ruling to force a same-sex marriage agenda.
It is clear the Obama administration finds the principles of federalism inconvenient in its effort to force states to redefine the institution of marriage, Lee said. The State Marriage Defense Act provides an important protection for states, respecting the right to choose for themselves how each will treat the institution of marriage under the law.
Supporters of gay marriage argue that its a human rights issue and that everyone should have the right to get married. .
There is no right to get married. If there is, will the courts order a person to marry some other person who wants to exercise his/her "right"?
Cruz and Lee just keep rolling right along, I love it! And Mike Lee needs to get his due credit also. These guys are courageous and strong, and are persevering.
What do you want to bet that John Wayne McCornyn will try to put the brakes on this, as well?
That will cause a stir.
What next? Will the degenerates want to push marrying their dog, cat or goat?
Finally someone who comprehends the 10 amendment.
What they want is the right to redefine marriage.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
Oh boy. All the Jon Stewart’s and Fox News people are going to go nuts. They want to push this in public even though its a scientific fact that pre pubescent kids can’t take learning about sex and it messed them up to learn about perverted sex
Right. polygamy. NAMBLA. It never stops.
Supporters of homosexual marriage say it isn’t about procreation or biology, it’s about love. So, if biology and procreation don’t matter, then a person ought to be able to marry an automobile, an animal, or anything they proclaim to love.
Regarding PC terms like "human rights" which pro-gay activist justices and judges don't want low-information citizens to find out are not in the Constitution, the states have never amended the Constitution to expressly protect so-called gay rights. So in order to work gay rights within the framework of the Constitution, supporters need to do the following.
They need to work with their state and federal lawmakers to propose a gay rights amendment to the Constitution to the states for ratification. And if the states should choose to ratify such an amendment, and I don't believe that they can get the required Article V state supermajority support in the foreseeable future, then gay rights will be an enumerated constitutional right and they will be heroes.
I wonder if Democrats filibuster this if Cornball will vote for cloture?
Probably not. In that instance, he will probably respect the dignity of the great traditions of the senate and let the dems have their way.....
Ted Cruz Ping!
If you want on/off this ping list, please let me know.
Please beware, this is a high-volume ping list!
So many things about homosexuality that involve ‘force’.
It will never stop until WE rise up and put a stop to the nonsense.
“When one tolerates bad behavior, then one can expect nothing but bad behavior”.
Homosexual “marriage” has always been the Trojan Horse which will totally flip “Good and Evil” and destroy the idea of morality in sex. Freud stated when morality is stripped from sex (the idea that anything is “good”) than culture will collapse. It is what happened in the vulgar Weimar Republic.
It erases Christian Ethics from the worldview of the children, who grow up in a warped, toxic culture—like in the last days of Rome, the Weimar Republic and like the little harem boys of Afghanistan or Samurai kids.
It is to mainstream insanity—irrationality and puerility in males and females and sexualize children which destroys normal sexual identity formation-—an idolatry with removes Virtue (Justice System), and creates a bigger division between the sexes where they are never united in some instances, celebrating the sexist relationships, which actually will deny children their biological natural parent (AND IT IS celebrated as GOOD!) It is antithetical to Natural Law and “Justice” (Virtue) which are the foundations of our legal system. So is abortion (unconstitutional to deny Right to Life)-—but what the hey???? What is Truth/Justice/Virtue?
It is insidiously evil to warp the worldview of little children with unnatural, dysfunctional irrational evil ideology which is protected by a “Justice” (virtue) system. Christianity is the most Reasoned religion which created the Age of Reason and Newton and the USA. Without Christian worldview, we would never have had a Renaissance or the removal of Slavery and Pederasty as a “Good”.
Abortion only helped to destroy the maternal instinct in girls and create tension between male and female and to dehumanize life and start the corrosive sexualization of the children. Homosexual marriage will drive the nail in the coffin. Normal is what children see and the law protects. Children don’t have parents, parenting anymore for the most part.
Nit picking here for sure, but the thing that's wrong with saying "I support traditional marriage" is the unsaid implication that there's any kind EXCEPT marriage between one man and one woman. There isn't any other kind of marriage.
State’s rights issue.
Nice words. I wish to God I could believe those words. I am so disenchanted now I can't see a path forward to stop any of this. I feel like there are less than a dozen in Congress worth a crap. There are just not that many of us left and we will die off. Most young kids are being indoctrinated. 50 or so "gender types" on Facebook? What the hell happened to this country?
Agree, and there is no 14th amendment equal protection issue either.
In a nutshell...people in this country stopped believing in AMERICAN EXCEPTIONAL-ISM and THEMSELVES.
It drives me crazy that there is all manner of hand-wringing and wailing on about “What are we gonna do??”
We need to collectively suck it up, roll up our sleeves and DO WHAT HAS TO BE DONE!
What did our Founding Fathers do? What happened when the Japs attacked PEARL HARBOR??
People seem to forget the simple FACT that this COUNTRY and this GOVERNMENT BELONG TO US!! IT IS OURS and by GOD that’s the way it’s going to be!
Human rights issue so therefore they should be fighting for polygamy too, after all they shout human rights issue, oh wait they don’t because they’re hypocrites and have an agenda
Hey! What's all this laying around stuff? Why are we all still laying around here for? ... Over? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no! And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough... The tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go!
What the heck happened to the Free Republic I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? This could be the greatest night of our lives, but we're gonna let it be the worst. "Ooh, we're afraid to do anything because we might get in trouble." Well just kiss my ass from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this.
Reid, he's working at the Vegas Pawn Shop.
Obama, greeter at a Frisco bath house!
Let’s roll, brother!
Thank you CRUZ AND LEE!!!!!!
GOD BLESS YOU
God defined marriage. Those who try to redefine it might as well be trying to redefine “up” and “down,” before jumping off eighty foot cliffs.
Believe me, the rocks at the bottom won’t care about your definitions.
Cruz and Lee are off-base. States have no “right” to define marriage.
It is what it is, no matter what any of them think about it.
“then a person ought to be able to marry an automobile,”
The way some men act about their cars, I can see this kind of marriage being supported among men. :)
States have the right to uphold our millennia-old definition of marriage: one girl and one boy against those who want it to mean anything marrying anything.
Any powers/rights not expressly enumerated by the Constitution as FED responsibility are reserved to the states.
No state has any right or legitimate authority to overrule the laws of nature and nature’s God. All they possess is the obligation to order their laws and policies thereby.
Well, the States are the Laboratories that prove ideas and policies harmful or advantageous. Witness Walker with Wisconsin unions, Texas with taxes, California with over-regulation.
If a state wants to welcome same-sex, those seeking it will abscond to it, leaving the state that denies them it. Win-Win, if you ask me.
The Tenth Amendment is unconstitutional and racist./s
I didn’t read it that way. I read it as Cruz and Lee saying that states can’t be discriminated against by the Fed if those states define marriage in a way consistent with the values of its citizens.
It would be possible to say that states shouldn’t be in the marriage business at all, but they are, and even if they weren’t, they’d still have to relate to married people, so it would behoove them to have some understanding of what constituted that in their particular state.
States are not laboratories for trying to redefine nature.
Ted Cruz, 2016.
Write-in, no matter who they try to foist on us.
Ok...good. How do we stop the courts from doing the same? That’s the REAL problem!
Exactly! I love what Cruz is doing and am behind him 100 percent. I hope he bears in mind:
Some "social conservatives" approach it from a limited government standpoint, and understand that LIMITING government to prevent it from punishing a baker who refuses to bake a cake for a gay couple, or punishing the private owners of a hall who refuse to rent out for a "gay" marriage, or punishing employers, adoption agencies, landlords, or any other private entity for not going along with the pretend "marriage" of two homosexuals -- that limiting government from doing that kind of punishing, is the right and MORAL path.
It's frustrating that there are "social conservatives" who want to make gay marriage "illegal." That is like making unicorns illegal.
The better solution is make it illegal for anyone to punish people who peacefully, civilly, politely tell open homosexuals, "Go somewhere else."
Well said. And I knew I could count on you to say it. Hope you're well.
Does that mean it is ok if the gay marriage issue is left to the states and so states like MA, NY and CA decide they are going to go ahead and have gay marriage while the states with traditional values decide to vote it down? I just want to know, would that be ok around here?
Cruz and Lee are the best. Few others in the senate can be trusted to take a stand against perversion.
“What next? Will the degenerates want to push marrying their dog, cat or goat?”
Yup. You can bet on it. Incest, bestiality...the depravity of liberals is limitless.
My question was of the rhetorical nature.
My point is that the powers not granted to the federal government in the Constitution are left up to the states. That is basically what the 10th says. As for gay “marriage”, a state can recognize any fantasy they want, and other states can’t, but the feds do not have the right to force this on the states.
Cruz is the ONLY one standing up to the federal government’s end run around the laws of the land.
