Schumer Backs Tactic to Bring Immigration Overhaul to a Vote (Needs 12 GOP House Votes to Pass)
NY Times ^ | 2/13/14 | ASHLEY PARKER and JONATHAN WEISMAN

Senator Charles E. Schumer, one of the architects of broad immigration legislation that passed the Senate in June, on Thursday embraced the idea of using a procedural maneuver known as a discharge petition to circumvent the Republican majority in the House and bring sweeping immigration legislation to a vote before the end of the year.

“The idea that’s begun circulating, to do a discharge petition on immigration reform in the House, is a good one and I would urge House Democrats to take it up,” Mr. Schumer, Democrat of New York, said in an email statement. “It’s clear a majority of the House supports immigration reform. A minority faction has scared Republicans out of acting even though large parts of the Republican base, including business and religious groups, support the bill, making a discharge petition an appropriate remedy.”

Mr. Schumer was responding to a recent column in The Washington Post by E. J. Dionne Jr. that suggested that Democrats use the tactic to try to force the Republican-controlled House to take up a broad immigration overhaul, most likely passing it with almost entirely Democratic votes.

It was not the first time in recent weeks that Mr. Schumer has floated an out-of-the-box idea in an attempt to keep alive the prospects of an immigration overhaul. During a “Meet the Press” appearance on Sunday, Mr. Schumer suggested passing immigration legislation this year, but delaying its implementation until 2017, in order to assuage the concern of many Republicans who do not trust President Obama to enforce the laws.

Boehner and the Republicans are outnumbered 201 to 234, so obviously the Democrats will get their way. Shhh, don’t spoil it for them and tell Boehner his party has the 234.

Schumer is the Rasputin of our times and a Robbespierre-wannabe.

He is vile, slimy, immoral and a general schmuck. A typical Democrat, and those are the nicest things I can say about him.

God, New York has too many Democrats. Do your thing, please!

John Cornyn and Mitch McConnell will be first in line to vote FOR cloture then vote AGAINST the petition.

Ah, for the good old days when senators minded their own business and stayed out of the house’s business.

Democrats desperately need the immigration issue up front and center to deflect attention away from Obamacare. They will keep dragging it up whenever they can, and there will be idiot Republicans willing to help them.

Boehner needs to try to man up for once in his life and tell Obergruppenfuhrer Schumer where to go. Come on Johnny, it ain’t all that tough.

The Hispanics who were made citizens last time have an unemployment rate close to that of blacks.

This isn’t being done for ‘workers’. We have workers who can’t find jobs..

‘Immigration’ reform is about bringing in more Democrats. Period.

Here would be my reply to Chuckles the Clown if I were Speaker.

“Senator Schumer, following the lead of the current Senate Majority Leader in the last session I as Speaker have decided I set the rules of the house and only I will decide what legislation will come to the floor!”

I’ve got to hand it to them. Democrats live for this crap. All politics all the time. Unlike the wimp in the House who figures its never the right time to fight for anything and just rolled over for a debt increase.
