The son-in-law of the elderly couple killed this week in a package bomb explosion at their Tennessee home has been charged in the case, authorities said Thursday evening.

A grand jury returned indictments of felony first-degree murder and felony first-degree premeditated murder against Richard Parker, 49, police said at a press conference. Authorities would not elaborate on how they came to identify him as the suspect, and said he was arrested at his home on Thursday.

Hopefully Tennessee has the death penalty and it's applied to this turkey if convicted.

I yearn for the days of party lines, when TV went off the air at 5:00pm. I’m not a Luddite...but damn close.

Sccuuuzzzee Me.

I’m in my ‘60s. Don’t EVER remember TV going off the air at 5PM.

And we were the first on the block to HAVE a TV. Mennonites all trooped over to the house at 6 pm to watch the NEWS.

Stations signed off at 11 or 12 pm.

An earlier item, reporting that Marion Setzer had died, suggested that it might have been related to Jon Setzer’s legal work. But no ... family. Very sad situation.

I think I will wait until there is some sign of actual evidence furthur than law enforcement being desperate to claim they have a suspect.

Declining to reveal why he was the person charged is upon occasion because they can’t come up with a reason that can’t be disproved. The admission raises red flags.

Does the name “Richard Jewel” ring a bell?

If he is convicted - does he still get any inheritance?

Gorush,

Give you that.

I was in PA. Different set of circumstances.

In those days, ND and Minn. were REALLY conservative.

But 17:00? I guess they were conserving electricity, or they thought NO ONE HAD A TV TO WATCH!!

LOL, that was most likely the case.

Oh Jeez, I remember party lines too.

You could NEVER get a word in edgewise unless you picked up the phone and pleaded for the gossips to give you a few minutes to make a call.

And then you KNEW they were all listening in.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a big Ike fan...he seriously mistreated Joe McCarthy for whom I have MUCH more affinity.

Yep, I remember and Jewel was never charged but you’d never know that by the pounding he got.

I had a feeling that it was a family member. I’ll bet that he got tired of waiting for them to die to get at their money and property.

Yea, a death row inmate is more likely to die of old age than to be put to death with the way the law allows them to seek appeal after appeal after appeal.

I think that the law prohibits a convict from benefiting monetarily from your crimes.

That’s a distinct possibility.

It’s strange they’re not clear on if he has a criminal record. I believe they’d know that before it went to a grand jury, they’re just not saying.

I think there are still radio stations that sign off at official sunset. I worked at one back in the 70s that signed off around 4:45 in the winter.

No - not a serious question. Just a way of stating what seems obvious if it is him. Nice house, etc. I wonder how the daughter (his wife) is taking this all in. So sad that their time of retirement, enjoying the fruits of their labors, playing with grandkids, etc. was taken from them.

I remember as a boy when the station signed off in Virginia. A preacher would come out on a horse and read a bible scriprure.

When you think about it, TV didn't start getting big on the coasts until after WWII, so the somewhat belated appearance of television networks in western ND in the mid to late 50s really didn't lag the more urban markets by that much. Look at cell phone coverage maps a few decades later, as coverage areas develop and the patterns are similar. TV expanded first and fastest in the urban markets (most potential customers per square mile), then more slowly filled in markets in areas where population density is lower.

Satellite TV, wireless communications are popular in markets where infrastructure costs are higher on a per customer basis.

Assuming this guy is guilty, I have a feeling there will be a lot around like him -- a younger generation so desperate for cash they'll do anything to get it. Elder relatives will be targeted for inheritance.

This guy is the tip of the iceberg.
