L/Cpl. Thomas E. Creek, USMC (MOH)
India Company, 3rd Battalion, Ninth Marines, 3rd Marine Division (REIN)

From Today in U.S. Military History:

Near Cam Lo, Republic of Vietnam, 13 February 1969

Citation: "For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a rifleman with Company I in action against enemy forces. L/Cpl. Creek’s squad was providing security for a convoy moving to resupply the Vandegrift Command Base when an enemy command detonated mine destroyed 1 of the vehicles and halted the convoy near the Cam Lo Resettlement Village. Almost immediately, the marines came under a heavy volume of hostile mortar fire followed by intense small-arms fire from a well-concealed enemy force. As his squad deployed to engage the enemy, L/Cpl. Creek quickly moved to a fighting position and aggressively engaged in the fire fight. Observing a position from which he could more effectively deliver fire against the hostile forces. he completely disregarded his own safety as he fearlessly dashed across the fire-swept terrain and was seriously wounded by enemy fire. At the same time, an enemy grenade was thrown into the gully where he had fallen, landing between him and several companions. Fully realizing the inevitable results of his action, L/Cpl. Creek rolled on the grenade and absorbed the full force of the explosion with his body, thereby saving the lives of 5 of his fellow marines. As a result of his heroic action, his men were inspired to such aggressive action that the enemy was defeated and the convoy was able to continue its vital mission. L/Cpl. Creek’s indomitable courage, inspiring valor and selfless devotion to duty upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country."

Snow update at the Beachy homestead:

7 inches this morning

then sleet/rain

got sidewalk and vehicles cleaned off.

now it’s snowing heavy again...expecting another 3-4 inches.

Son in Manassas said they had 12 so far.

Most places are closed again tomorrow.

Thank you.

I originally did not agree with Tom Brokaw’s calling them the “Greatest Generation” but am having second thoughts.

I was recently watching a program about the construction of the Empire State Building. Those guys built it ahead of schedule and under budget. The method of construction used back then was hot bolts which shrunk when cooled and was stronger than the method used today.

I still am not sure they were the greatest, thinking the ones who fought the Revolutionary War and the War Between the States deserve equal mention but they were indeed hard and capable workers.

I posted this vignette a little earlier on "Remembering the Troops:"

The weather gurus pulled a fast one on us again. After a short hiatus with rain we were supposed to head back into light snow as the temp dropped this evening. Apparently a "comma" developed at the tail end of the storm that changed the dynamics of the storm dramatically. At about 6:00 p.m. local time, heavy snow began falling and accumulated rapidly. I left the house at 6:30 to pick David up from work and the roads were an absolute mess. I got him back home at 7:00 p.m. and attempted to park. The road was extremely slick and I couldn't get into my stop. I drove down the hill to go around the block, but was unable to get moving after the first right turn. I backed around and drove back up the hill to my house and attempted to get into the parking space from the opposite direction. No dice - I couldn't make any progress at all. John-Man came out and started shoveling under and in front of my drive wheels to no avail. Finally, John-Man, David, and two of their friends came out and were able to push me into my spot.

A mere thirty minutes to get my van into the parking spot.

I hate Winter!!!!

We had about 12" overnight through early afternoon today. Then at 6:00 p.m. all Hell broke loose - we got another couple of inches in less than an hour.

I pray this is the last one for the year, at least.

Thank God it isn’t as bad as Feb. 2010 when we got 2 feet!
