Being gay IS in your genes, say scientists in controversial new DNA study

Being gay could be in the DNA.

Scientists have found two stretches of DNA linked to homosexuality in men.

The confirmation of the existence of a ‘gay gene’ or genes will strengthen arguments that homosexuality is a matter of biology, rather than choice.

However, it also raises the prospect of a genetic test that could be used by insurance companies to discriminate against clients or by pregnant women to abort gay babies.

In the study, Chicago University researchers analysed the DNA of more than 400 pairs of gay brothers, recruited at Gay Pride festivals at marches over several years.

This revealed flagged up two pieces of DNA that seem to be linked to homosexuality.

It is not known which of the many genes they contain are key or how they affect the development of sexual orientation.

However, the result, revealed at the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s prestigious annual conference, backs up a contentious 1993 study.

That research, the first to find evidence of a ‘gay gene’, created a storm of controversy, which was further fuelled when other scientists failed to find a genetic link.

Dr Michael Bailey from Northwestern University in Illinois, who contributed to the latest study, said it is the biggest of its kind.

He added: ‘Sexual orientation has nothing to do with choice. Our findings suggest there may be genes at play – we found evidence for two sets that affect whether a man is gay or straight.

‘Although this could one day lead to a pre-natal test for male sexual orientation, it would not be very accurate, as there are other factors that can influence the outcome.’

Despite this, he would not would not object to a prenatal test being developed.

I look forward to comments from FReepers knowledgeable in science. I will say from a Biblical standpoint that if this is true, it won't change anything. The Catholic Church has doctrine on the purpose of sex and marriage that won't change.

He said: ‘Clearly parents should not be allowed to torture or kill babies. But they can currently choose to terminate a pregnancy early on, so they should be allowed to have as much information on the future child as possible.’

Wouldn't it be quite ironic that two liberal pillars contradict each other so. The irony is also that the intolerant conservatives who are pro-life and opposed to gay marriage would keep their child regardless because they are pro-life. I would.

It seems his mind is definitely made up on this matter.

we already have proof it isn’t genetic (ie hard-coded).

Identical twin studies have shown when one is gay, the other is only gay about 50% of the time.

If it was hardcoded and immutable, unchangeable, the second twin would have to be gay 100% of the time.

The fact it isn’t shows there is no hardcoding that people simply cannot help but be gay.

If you have a code to not procreate, then how to you continue the code?

Genes are just one part of the story. Then there’s epigenetics. Gene expression based on external triggers, and so on.

It’s inevitable that there will be a Nobel prize for someone can make a convincing case that he/she has found the “gay gene.”

While a homosexual attractions might be a matter of biology, homosexual actions are always a matter of choice.

I doubt this study. The size of the tests conducted by New Zealand’s top geneticists, collating studies from Sweden to Australia to the USA, spoke for themselves. Conducted on identical twins, less than 10% of cases found both twins to be homosexuals.

There is a double edged sword here for the homosexuals. That being that if they do locate some kind of switch that makes someone homosexual, it really isn’t long before they are able to turn it off, and an even shorter span of time (as alluded to in the article) before there can be prenatal tests and subsequent abortions, inevitable in western society.

And should they discover a gene therapy that cures homosexuality, what will our government do? Ban it?

There are far-reaching implications, but as I say, I think this study will come up bunk.

By forcing marriage onto the unwilling.

Arranged marriages were the historical norm until after the industrial revolution.

True. The title makes it sound absolute, but the contents of the article let on that this isn’t definite.

Uh huh.

Homosexuality is just as in-born as any other psychological disorder.

****‘Although this could one day lead to a pre-natal test for male sexual orientation, ****

And this will really cause the lib parents to have a conflict. Abort or not. Wonder how the LGBT community will feel when they see their own “kind” being flushed down the toilet.

I can almost see the posts on lib web sites now...”I’m in favor of unlimited abortion, but in this case....”

they used a study group of two gay brothers at a gay free for all......are there other brothers who are not gay?....does this mean ALL gay men will have gay brothers?....

I find lots of questions about this so called study.....

yes, I'm sure nature has its place...nuture has its place too...

learned behavior has its place as well....

personally, I find it hard how a human being born to procreate would have such an abnormality that it would not want to procreate....if this was the animal world, that abnormality would be selected out....

It's not the presence of the gene - it's the activation.

So, homosexuality is a genetic defect (a defect in the genes which drive us to mate with the appropriate mates in order to keep the species alive and well).

It's a defect which can be overcome with proper parenting and education.
