The Man Who Lost the Internet
The American Interest ^ | February 13, 2014 | Walter Russell Mead

Posted on 02/13/2014 8:56:48 PM PST by neverdem

If Al Gore goes down in history as the man who gave us the Internet, Barack Obama may become known as the President who lost it for us.

Amid the continuing outrage over U.S. spying practices, countries around the world are doing what they can to curb Washington’s digital capabilities. Yesterday, EU leaders issued a policy paper laying out a timetable for reducing American influence over the governance of the Internet, citing the NSA spying scandal as a justification for doing so:

“Large-scale surveillance and intelligence activities have … led to a loss of confidence in the Internet and its present governance arrangements.” (WSJ)

The implications of these proposed changes, as well as Europe’s ability to implement them, remain vague. What is abundantly clear, however, is that the overreach and poor management of security programs under President Obama’s watch have inflicted serious harm on our relationships with some of our closest allies.

This is not only bad news; it is also deeply ironic. This was supposed to be the administration that mended ties and restored America’s image around the world. Instead, opposition to U.S. leadership on important policy portfolios is galvanizing around the world. As the Wall Street Journal noted:

By pushing for less U.S. control of the Internet, the European Commission is aligning itself in some ways with Brazil, which has struck a particularly strident tone over Internet governance in the wake of news reports alleging the U.S. government spied on Brazilians, including President Dilma Rousseff. The country has called for more international control, and is hosting a conference on the future of Internet governance in April.

Here in the United States the MSM still sings hymns of praise to Obama, our long-awaited second Lincoln, the supposed no-drama genius in the Oval Office. History will not be so kind.

Incompetent. The real problem is that we have a country that can elect him.

As long as there are governments, they are going to want to spy.

Discreet spying probably won’t even be noticed by over 99% of us. These spies are not looking for your missing sock. They are looking for large, concerted movements of satanically led troublemakers. They see their fill of that today. That jug of “illegal” raw milk you talked about getting? They couldn’t care less.

Ham handed spying by fanatics WILL burden all of us.

Look this a non issue..each country in the world has its own telco and they all interconnected...so just like you dial a country to first connect in to that country's telco network...ever country can be it's own domain have it own country dns...have country specific AS...have it own blocks of IP6 address for inter-country traffic..its not and issue...

..IP Networks are meant to segmented and segregated in to separate domains or autonomous systems..so let each country run its own

There’s a big difference between losing the American grasp on the Internet, and just throwing that status away, for the sake of fairness of course.

The Internet uncensored is the bastion of freedom. Totalarism trembles in its force. A free Internet will give freedom to all. A controlled Internet is nothing but the tool of totalitarian governement.

Looks to me like what is abundantly clear is that our "allies" see an opportunity and want to grab all they can get.

The author of the article was complicit in that, by the way. Mead voted for Obama.

"The MSM still sings hymns of praise to Obama".

The MSM wouldn't care if the internet disappeared, or more realistically, became nationalized or globalized under authoritarian control.

Think of how many billions of ad revenue the newspapers, magazines and other ink-print media have permanently lost due to internet advertising. Much of this print media is already out of business and most of those remaining are teetering on the brink of insolvency and will soon disappear forever.

The world-wide communist/fascists/socialists are already salivating over prospects of taking over the internet and running it. Advertising on the internet by evil corporations, companies and other greedy capitalists will be almost non-existent because public taxes will be paying the freight. Think today's tax-supported public broadcasting, both TV and radio. Little to no advertising, but riddled with left-wing propaganda.

Newspapers, magazines, etc. will be almost completely out of business thanks to the groundwork laid by Obama and his totalitarian minions. The owners, publishers, writers and other toilers in the print business are at this moment doomed to be thrown under the bus and, like mechanized unthinking robots, they continue to support, idolize and feed the hands that are biting them to certain death in increments.
