A great country deserves a great immigration system (Cornyn 2013 Op-Ed)
Fox News ^ | 5/13/13 | John Cornyn

Immigration reform is, at its core, a human issue. Good policy is driven by good data, but we must never lose sight of the fact that behind every statistic there is a person – a son or a daughter, a mother or a father.

Last weekend, as I traveled through South Texas, I met some of these people. The stories they shared with me illustrate the humanity of the immigration debate that all sides must acknowledge.

In Rio Grande City, I met a young woman who came to Texas to escape persecution in El Salvador several years ago. She did so illegally, paying thousands of dollars to be smuggled across the border.

After arriving in Texas, she fell victim to the same man she had entrusted to bring her into the country. He beat her, raped her, and forced her into a life of prostitution. For years she endured this terror and misery, until she summoned the courage to reach out for help.

By the tragic standards of illegal immigration, some would say she’s among the lucky ones. Unlike so many others, she survived the grueling trek through South Texas that has needlessly taken the lives of so many.

For ranchers in Brooks County, some 70 miles north of the border, the sight of illegal border-crossers traversing their land is routine.

In my short time there, I saw many.

Even so, it is often the migrants you don’t see trudging through the brush that offer the most heart wrenching reminder of the dismal state of our immigration system.

What he really means is “we’re fat enough, rich enough to tolerate rape, robbery, disease and unfettered pillaging or our traditional sovereignty to withstand during my pitiful lifetime”.

how about we have a great wall followed by a great door with a great turn style that would have great flow control to limit immigration during times of weak economy

He wants sob stories.

Look around the graveyards, view the dead at the hands of illegals.

Where is the compassion for your own countrymen, Senator?

Tugging at heartstrings doesn't hide the fact that only a liar or a moron would claim that amnesty is the solution here. It will just encourage millions more to try their luck in just the way this woman did. The correct policy is

  1. secure the border in a transparently verifiable way;
  2. end the anchor-baby interpretation of the 14th Amendment;
  3. enforce eVerify without exception and with severe penalties;
  4. no government benefits beyond critical emergency care (and that ought to be billed back to the home government); and
  5. NO "Path to Citizenship" - ever - for anyone who has entered the US illegally.

I want the same immigration laws that Mexico has. If those laws are good enough for Mexico then they’re good enough for me!

(Note to the knee-jerk reaction crowd: You might want to know that Mexico has the most restrictive immigrantion laws in the entire Western Hemisphere.)

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT ALLOWED TO REMAIN IN US DESPITE ARRESTS ACCUSED OF DRUNK DRIVING DEATH

Allen and Debra VanHoozer are mourning the loss of their child, 24-year-old Heather, after an illegal immigrant who was not deported by U.S. authorities after a series of run-ins with law enforcement. The Mexican national was allowed to stay in the U.S. after numerous drug arrests, resulting in him allegedly killing the young woman by operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
U.S. authorities claim they do not routinely deport illegal aliens for marijuana offenses; apparently they do not routinely deport people for being in the U.S. illegally, either.

Does anyone out there remember that the United States actually “owned and operated” the most successful immigration system in history?
Millions (literally) of people came to the USA, “tired, poor, yearning to be free”, and under a strict set of laws became immigrants to this great country. The children of the “tired, poor, yearning to be free”, were educated in the best education ever devised and became, proudly AMERICANS.
These new Americans fought and won 2 World Wars, built the industrial giant of the world, put men on the moon, and spread freedom around the world. All as a result of a immigration system that today is scorned.
Amnesty answers the desires of foreigners who wish to have the blessings of life in the United States, but without any desire to actually become Americans.
We do not need “Immigration Reform”. What this country requires, for its own survival, is a re-introduction of the most successful immigration system in all of history.

Should we weep for the hundreds of millions of people south of the border who were unable to get enough money together to pay a coyote to sneak them across the border?

Why the Hell don't we just grant AMNESTY to everyone on the planet? They all DESERVE to be AMERICANS.

Just open the border and let everyone in. IT'S JUST NOT FAIR to let the illegals who are here in free without letting everyone on the planet in free.

We can pay for it. We're only 18 Trillion dollars in debt. We still have plenty of money to put all these people on the welfare rolls.
