Cold weather slams U.S. factory output, spurs growth fears

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. manufacturing output unexpectedly fell in January, recording its biggest drop in more than 4-1/2 years, as cold weather disrupted production in the latest indication the economy got off to a weak start this year.

Though consumer sentiment was steady in early February, there are worries the persistent and widespread harsh weather could dampen the morale of households, whose budgets are being stretched by soaring heating bills.

"The big question is whether the U.S. economy is slowing significantly or whether it is merely going through a soft patch caused by extreme weather. The evidence points to the latter," said Chris Williamson, chief economist at Markit in London.

Here in flyover country, the economy certainly doesn’t look very good and I don’t think it’s because of the weather.

One thing that stands out when I talk to people is that employers know they have all the leverage (due to minimal alternative job options for people who are already employed).

I am buying absolutely nothing.....being unemployed will make you do that.

I wish someone would address the fundamental problems of this country honestly.

I’m all for capitalism, but a lot of employers realize how tight the job market is, and a lot of employees are not having much fun these days.

What % of those workers voted for the party that created this economic stagnation?

The GOP would do well to start working toward cutting some of the low level taxes like payroll and income taxes. I think the fact that he talked about cutting the tax imposed on manufacturing is one of the reasons Santorum did so well in Michigan. Real regulatory reform would go a long way as well.

We can cut corporate and capital gains taxes all we want, its still not worth investing that money here. We’ve got to make it cheaper to hire and operate here.

Not many that I know, maybe none.
Most of the entitlement army that elected Baraq doesn’t work, at least “on the books”.

An editorial in the WSJ today posited just that.

That is simply a shift of your economic activity, not a reduction. Might even be an increase, if you are frugal (other than the need to heat).

I wouldn't disagree, but I have seen a pretty high number of Rat supporters in blue collar jobs.

I know its the truth.

I ordered a half tank of propane that came to about $4.19 per gallon with all the extra surcharges included.

I immediately started looking into buying my own regulator and lines for running hot water and stove off 100lb tanks. Turns out that propane for “farm use” is considerably cheaper. They aren’t supposed to sell it to me at farm use cost but if I have my own tanks to refill, few sellers ask.

The GOP and Democrats are both in bed with countries, other than our own.

Bring back manufacturing jobs, to America.

Now.

The Soviet Union always blamed the weather for their shortfalls. They always fell short of their quota so the weather was always bad!

Do these chumps think we actually believe these lies?
