My View: Block gun violence with background checks

One year after gun violence at Clackamas Town Center and in Newtown, Conn., shook communities across this nation, we have yet to settle the debate on gun safety in Salem or our nation’s capital. As we continue to mourn these tragedies, we must do more to prevent them from happening again.

We in public health are thoroughly committed to protecting the safety of our communities. The Oregon Public Health Association and the National Physicians Alliance support state and federal efforts to ensure background checks for all gun purchases. Without background checks, guns in the hands of dangerous individuals continue to threaten the safety of our communities.

Both the shooter and victim in most gun homicides have criminal records. Background checks are not going to stop them. Most legal gun sales already are subject to background checks. Background checks would not have averted the mass shootings that grab the headlines. It is a pig in a poke and it infuriates the gun grabbers that the majority of Americans can see right through their B.S.

How about background checks to be able to say anything? To protest grievances? A background check to become president?

At what point does the line get drawn? Every time exactly the same place: Wherever the liberals feel that it should be drawn.

The reason for the 2nd is not just hunting, nor self defense, nor home defense, but it is the only way to ensure that people have the tools to ensure that they can continue practicing their religion, continue having their voices heard by their government, and to ensure that tyrants don't steal their rights.

Maybe the only solution at this point is to protest and demand background checks of all editorial writers. No editorials without a 15 day waiting period. Maybe by changing the focus from one right to another, we can make it clear how stupid this insanity really is. Or, if somehow we are successful, we can wipe the liberals out of the publishing business as they fail background check after background check.

Where’s the prosecution numbers for actual “positive” denials? I suppose they are so low they don’t show up on anyones’s charts huh? I seem to recall that falsifying statements on the 4473 was a federal crime. Guess not.

Background checks did not prevent any of the recent mass shootings. In fact, all of these nut cases passed background checks, or in the case of Adam Lanza, his kooky mother passed the check.

Background checks occasionally stop someone from purchasing a weapon who cannot legally own one. However, mostly these checks just inconvenience law-abiding people and add extra cost.

A more effective deterrent is to encourage lawful gun ownership and outdoor carry. The only way to stop a nutcase with gun is for a sane armed person to use another gun to stop said nut case.

the Constitution for the Republic of Maine states that all men between the ages of, it is still being discussed but will either be 16,17, or 18, and 65, are by law members of the Militia. The right of the Militia to be armed shall never be infringed.

This section also ends any and all abortions by stating that the age is counted from the moment of conception. So, the age will be, as it is counted here in the good ole USA, 15 and 1/4, 16 and 1/4 or 17 and 1/4.

Further the Constitution restricts the standing army to only 1,000 men, and there can be no use of the Militia outside of Maine’s borders without a 3/4 vote of the Militia.

Those wishing to be kept up to date can email FreeMaine@hushmail.com with “Add Me” in the subject line. If you are from Maine mention that in the subject line as well, you will get additional information after answering a very few non personal questions that will identify whether you are from Maine or not.

In 2010, 76,142 denials were issued. 62 cases were referred for prosecution. 13 resulted in a guilty verdict or plea. There was no mention of what actual penalties were rendered.

Universal background checks followed by universal registration followed by confiscation. I’m sure the criminals will be following the law.

...we have yet to settle the debate on gun safety in Salem or our nation’s capital.

No, there is no debate on "gun safety" - no one is saying "gee, I'd like more accidents, more mayhem." The debate or contention is over violence. It isn't "gun violence" it is violence, the weapon is just the tool. Ignorant liberals and fascists each (for their own reasons) want to remove the tool. That approach has been tried and has a 100% failure rate at actually reducing violence.

We in public health are thoroughly committed to protecting the safety of our communities.

Ah, then you are pro-firearm, and all for private ownership and CC - right? Because that approach has demonstrated results at reducing violence.

The Oregon Public Health Association and the National Physicians Alliance support state and federal efforts to ensure background checks for all gun purchases. Without background checks, guns in the hands of dangerous individuals continue to threaten the safety of our communities.

I see. What you really want is background checks on all firearms sales - including private transfers, right? Wrong. That will not work. You don't think criminals obtain firearms illegally already? You think maybe this might just increase an already tremendously lucrative black market for firearms? Do you really think requiring a background check for a private transfer will stop the illegal sales? Hey doc, if that'll work, lets just pass a law saying all private drug transactions have to happen at a pharmacy with a doctor's prescription. Same thing. Think that'd stop the illegal drug trade? {snort} Of course not. What makes you think background checks would stop illegal arms transfers? Doc, you're not the brightest bulb on the string, are you...

I don’t trust the government. They say they want background checks to ensure that the wrong people don’t get guns. Yet the type and serial number of the gun is added to the form. What does that have to do with my qualification to own a gun? I know it’s just a time saver for when they decide to confiscate guns. There is no doubt in my mind that taking away our guns is the final goal and all this other stuff is just intermediate steps in the process.

to ensure background checks for all gun purchases.

How are they going to ensure checks for illegal gun purchases, which is where most of the shooting deaths arise? They can't even stop illegal drug transactions.

Apparently there must be some confusion. The banks are now allowed to do transactions with mj dealers but aren’t the banks overseen by the feds who deem mj to still be illegal despite some states that now allow it for recreational use?

Its ironic that the author used the Clackamas Town Center as an example. The shooter Jacob Roberts STOLE his AR15. I am sure a background check would have stopped him. The mall did have a posted prohibition on firearms and that worked out well.

The factor that stopped this gun violence was Nick Meli drawing his legally carried and concealed pistol and pointing at the shooter who promptly committed suicide.

Yup. Seems they “forgot” to mention that little fact. But then shouldn’t Nick have been charged since he must have seen the sign as well and had a gun on the premises?

An excellent question, and I believe the NRA has those numbers. As you correctly guessed, it is near zero.

Another anti-gunner with “good intentions” that is oblivious to the world around them. These “keep guns out of the hands of children and criminal” pleadings are beyond idiotic. Why, here’s a thought. Why don’t we just make crime illegal and all crime would immediately stop.

Back ground checks are just stealth registration. Anyone who actually believes the FBI isn’t keeping every single gun and gun owner through the call in instant back ground check is really foolish. And why are doctors so interested in asking about firearms in the home now? Especially when ALL medical data is required to be kept on file with the federal government. Anyone wanna bet the NRA amendment that forbids using Obamacare for gun ownership information will be followed by the Obamatons???

No sense wasting the time and money to do that.

Just ‘ban’ them from the industry for punctuation and spelling errors.

Then ‘suspend’ the writer for the same offense.

We should wipe the lot of them out in a short period of time OR at least they may start paying attention again.

65 to 75 are allowed to remain as voluntary, with full privileges other than voting to go to war outside the borders, that is restricted to men between 21 & 65, the ones who would go.

Men younger than 21 would not go, men over 65 would not go. The reason for the 75% vote is to assure that it will never happen.

Those signs have very little legal standing. If you are a legal CCW carrier and are ID’ed as having a gun all they can do is ask you to leave. If you don't then the management can call the police and you can be cited for trespassing. I am not lawyer so don't consider this as legal advice.

If you think about it a CCW carrier who is ID’ed with a gun has failed. The operative word is concealed.
