A steady flow of talented, industrious immigrants can fuel a booming economy
The Fresno Bee ^ | February 13, 2014 | Thomas J. Donohue, president & CEO, U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

In a global economy, investment follows talent. When we draw top talent to our shores, investment dollars follow because companies want to be near the best workers.

An infusion of capital and economic development will be a tide that lifts all boats, creating jobs and opportunity for all Americans.

But the reverse is also true. If companies can't find talent on U.S. soil, or if it becomes too costly and burdensome, they will move their operations elsewhere. It's in our own best interests to welcome the world's brightest minds and hardest workers into our economy.

Immigrants can help bridge a growing skills gap in science, technology, engineering and math - the so-called STEM fields that are vital to a modern, competitive economy.

More than half of the master's and doctoral students studying the natural sciences and engineering disciplines at U.S. colleges and universities are from foreign countries.

Meanwhile, the number of American students studying STEM disciplines is growing at less than 1 percent per year. By 2018, there will be 230,000 unfilled positions requiring advanced STEM degrees, even if every U.S. STEM grad finds a job.

Many of our fastest-growing industries require advanced skills and higher education beyond a bachelor's degree - 22 percent of new job openings through 2020 will require at least a master's degree.

Among all 25- to 34-year-olds living in the United States, 10.6 percent of those with masters, professional or doctoral degrees are foreign born, compared with 8.5 percent of native-born young people....

That is pretty funny and it demonstrates the kind of math skills to be found in the WH and from other 0bama sycophants. In the equation the group being measured is ...

...those with masters, professional or doctoral degrees...

It is stated that 10.6% of that group are foreign born and 8.5% are native-born. Who comprises the other 80.9% of the group? Time travelers from the future who have not been born yet?

economy stinks so bad that the uneducated and unskilled illegal aliens are leaving

And the Mexican economy is actually doing steadily better. As our economy slides into the abyss and the Mexican economy improves, the illegal immigration problem just might sort itself out. Or 21st Century Okies just might pack up and head for Mexico.

I’m willing to bet a miniscule percentage of those foreign born with masters, professional and doctorates are illegals.

The only foreign born professional who are also illegal aliens are lawyers in California. And we sure have a shortage of lawyers here. We need more illegal alien lawyers to put all the native born lawyers out on the street. That's the ticket.

I’ve worked in mixed corporate teams made up of Americans + (legal, professional) foreign-born members

and also with

American-only corporate teams.

The former kicked the butts of the latter EVERY TIME, and made me much more money in sales commissions.

This was particularly true when a gnarled problem rose, and we needed solutions from outside-the-box.

And that doesn’t count worldwide sales calls, where faces from ALL OVER THE WORLD help sell products to people from ALL OVER THE WORLD.

Provincialism = ignorance.

/and, yes, the 1%’ers are deliberately importing millions of peasants, and our own peasants are accepting the situation passively.

I will say that frequently, I find hard working and industrious immigrants vastly more desirable than the entitled lumps of flesh that many “real” Americans have become.

sadly, the American dream is all too frequently practiced by people that were born elsewhere.

Well, yes, if our economy continues on a downward spiral that will definitely solve the illegal alien problem. That might make sense as a stratagem of policy in Progressive circles. I can only hope that the Republicans will think of something a little better. lol

If we stopped immigration those with degrees would be 100% native born.

We are not a nation of immigrants. Colonists and pioneers carved this nation out of the wilderness with their bare hands. Immigrants showed up later.

... the elephant in the room being that Americans, apparently, are no longer the brightest minds and hardest workers. That's the problem that should be addressed, in my opinion.

Why would talented foreigners come here? In there home countries, they’re not expected to support a large number of idlers and moochers.

um... they also use up our limited amount of resources like water, electricity, and gas. The average person drinks 182 gallons of water a year. There are an estimated 20 million illegals in the US.

Which means they are drinking 3 BILLION 640 million gallons of water a year.

but... that’s just DRINKING water.. they also use water for dishes, toilets, baths, ect

The average person uses a total of 100 gallons of water a day.

So lets do some math... 100 gallons * 365 days = 36,500 gallons per year PER illegal alien.

20 million X 36500 = 7300000000000 that’s 7 TRILLION 300 billion gallons of fresh water a year....

there are 39 trillion gallons of water in lake Tahoe... which means the illegals here are drinking lake Tahoe every 5 years or so.

Think about that the next time the government puts you on water restrictions or wont let farmers water their crops.

“We are not a nation of immigrants. Colonists and pioneers carved this nation out of the wilderness with their bare hands. Immigrants showed up later.”

If the immigrants who “showed up” between 1890 and 1940 hadn’t “showed up”, you would have been writing that in German or Japanese.

Yehh, if we seal off the border we risk stopping the flow of all of those Mexican scientists, engineers, medical researchers, and technological innovators who have been streaming across the border.

I guess we working class citizens should just settle for depressed wages and fewer opportunities to make way for people who broke into our county, broke our laws, undermined our economy, defrauded our social services, and conspire to sidestep our taxing authorities.

Cool. So when can we ease the restrictions on Western European immigration so we can start bringing in all of those culturally compatible German scientists and British mathematicians we need?

Didn't think so...
