Ilion, N.Y. — A union official said Saturday the Remington Arms Co.'s decision to open a manufacturing plant in Alabama does not bode well for Ilion, and he's blaming New York's Safe Act restrictions on assault weapons.
"It can't be good," said Fran Madore, president of United Mine Workers Local 717, which represents 1,180 of the 1,300 Remington employees in Ilion. "How can it be good?"
Madore said plant officials told him they wanted to meet with him on Monday. They did not say what they wanted to talk about, but Madore said he assumes it will be about the company's reported plans to open a 500,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Ala.
AL.com reported Saturday that the Huntsville facility could employ up to 2,000 people. It said details could be revealed on Monday about plans for a Remington facility in a former Chrysler plant near Huntsville International Airport....
"The SAFE Act has been a terrible thing from the beginning," he said. "You'd think New York would be doing everything to keep us. Instead, it passes a law that cripples us."
Remington and other firearms makers can still manufacture assault weapons in New York, but they can't sell them inside the state. New York lawmakers, at the urging of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, imposed the restrictions after a man armed with an assault rifle massacred twenty children and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012.

We have younger relatives in management jobs where skilled electricians/plumbers/welders are key workers.
All of these workers are union guys, and they are hunters and gun owners.
Our younger relatives can’t believe that ardent hunters and gun owners vote democratic. They get that deer wide eye stare in the headlights, from their workers when they try to discuss this paradox.
But I still wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for him to vote for a Republican.
I don’t have a list, but I recall the figures were 20% of the jobs lost *nationally* in the early 90s were in NYC, 20% in the rest of NYS, and 20% in California.
now since Cuomo (and before that Spitzer), there was not going to be any evil drilling.
so they will drill it and suck it out in PA and NY will get zero and this could have made NY economically viable and end income tax. But the Dhimmicrats would not have the power over people if they did that.....

Exactly, and that’s why I’m not exactly gung-ho for these people to follow their jobs to the red states when they move. They naturally don’t like a law which cost them their job, but they still embrace the other planks of the left’s platform, and will bring it all with them, and immediately start telling the native “hicks” how they’re all wrong for not supporting the watermelon agenda, abortion, the sodomite agenda, etc.
Is an “enterprise zone” anything like a “promise zone”, where they get incentives, but only for hiring blacks?
Remington may also be discovering there’s quite a market for suppressors. While legal for them to make (a change in law just for Remington), that NY residents (including their own employees) can’t buy them is just one more reason to leave.

Although he was an accomplished race-car driver, Milliken's best-known feat behind the wheel of his Bugatti Type 35 was rolling the vehicle in a 1948 road race at Watkins Glen, New York.
The accident happened when he overtook a supercharged MG at 160 km/h approaching a turn known as ''thrill corner''. Millikin recalled in 2001: ''I managed to pass him, but it was so close to that corner and the brakes on the Bug are not the world's greatest. I lost it on the corner and spun out and hit the hay.''
He emerged from his flipped car unscathed. The turn has been known as ''Milliken's Corner'' ever since.
One of his successes associated with high-speed cars was his role helping to design a stunt for the 1974 James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun, starring Roger Moore.
For many years, Milliken worked as a senior engineer at the Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory, a research facility in Buffalo, New York, associated with Cornell University. In the late 1960s, some of the scientists under Milliken's purview began running computer experiments on how to flip a car in midair using ramps. The researchers, using complex mathematical calculations, proved it was possible and invited a test driver to try it out.
The resulting barrel-roll move was employed by Moore's 007 secret agent persona during a car chase scene filmed in Thailand in a single take.
Milliken was born in Old Town, Maine, once known as the canoe-manufacturing capital of the world - hence his use of canoe wood in the early 1930s to build an aircraft. Today, the Milliken M-1 aircraft is in the collection of the Owls Head Transportation Museum in Maine.
In 1934, he graduated in mathematics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and after working at Boeing during World War II, he joined what became the Cornell Aeronautical Lab.
Milliken retired in 1976 as chief of the transportation research division and started a consulting business. He worked up until his death. In his spare time, he participated in more than 100 car races. He finished sixth in the 1947 Pikes Peak hill climb in Colorado, and in 2002 and 2007 drove his own radically designed MX-1 race car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England."

My next door neighbor (who worked for Milliken at CAL), when I wuz a kid, was the Chief Timer and Scorer at Watkins Glen.
