World's largest solar plant scorching birds in Nevada desert

A stretch of the Mojave Desert has been transformed by hundreds of thousands of mirrors into the largest solar power plant of its type in the world, but the milestone is being met with criticism from environmental groups concerned about the effect of solar energy on desert wildlife. The Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System, sprawling across roughly 5 square miles of federal land near the California-Nevada border, formally opened Thursday after years of regulatory and legal tangles ranging from relocating tortoises to assessing the impact on plants. The $2.2 billion complex of three generating units, owned by NRG Energy Inc., Google Inc. and BrightSource Energy, can produce nearly 400 megawatts — enough power for 140,000 homes. It began making electricity last year.

2.2 Billon for a 400 Megwatt power station is just asinine. A fossil fuel generators is around 1 mil per megawatt, about 1/5th the capital cost.

I think that might be off. in the last five years we rewired our plant, installed a scrubber on our 260MW unit, installed SNCRs on both units at a cost of 450 million. The unit total output is about 720MW gross.

The environmental controls at the 385MW Dry Fork Station cost 336 million. The plant was built in 2011.

Except that it's located in the Mojave Desert in San Bernardino County, California.

There was a discussion on this impressive array of panels, earlier in the week. Not sure if it was you who posted it.

If a developer had built that equivalent of homes in the desert the howls from liberals would have been heard all the way to Charlotte, NC. Since it’s a bunch of solar panels, they’re doing Gaia’s (liberals’ Earth goddess) work.

I like and sometimes feed birds leftover bread/pastry, but this is more tree-hugger worship. The birds will learn to avoid this, and can past this on offspring such as mice can do to trauma: http://phenomena.nationalgeographic.com/2013/11/15/mice-inherit-the-fears-of-their-fathers/

The point is, this environmently pushed plant does more damage tot he environment than 10 fossil fuel plants. It’s like the wind farms, incredibly ugly, and doesn’t put out near what a smaller nuclear or fossil fuel plant can provide.

These are the high technology jobs that kids coming out of college need! Wiping the mirrors at the powerplant, much like being a barrista at Starschmucks requires a Bachelor degree.

Got it. I was addressing the reason why libs object to this, even though it is a treehugger project itself. "Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen." (Romans 1:25)

You can find articles and YouTube videos on the cleaning process, but I doubt that the low information and mis-information voters really want to know. Demagoguery rules supreme.

They have repellent coatings on them. We have had Teflon and repellent fabrics for decades.

There is not much difference in output between dirty and clean, but dust does lower output.
