Excessive radiation levels detected at New Mexico waste site

Reuters) - Underground sensors have detected excessive radiation levels inside a nuclear waste storage site deep below New Mexico's desert, but no workers have been exposed and there was no risk to public health, U.S. Department of Energy officials said on Sunday.

An air-monitoring alarm went off at 11:30 p.m. local time Friday indicating unsafe concentrations of radiation inside the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in what DOE officials said appeared to be the first such mishap since the facility opened in 1999.

As of Sunday, the source of the high radiation readings had yet to be determined, and a plan to send inspection teams below ground to investigate was put on hold as a precaution

I wonder if this is another government lie? They lie about everything else, why not this too?

Thanks for posting this. I just sent it to a friend of mine as he son goes to a technical college in New Mexico and it’s related to space exploration or other applications and I don’t know where it is so thought his dad should know about this.

My B.I.L. was one of the engineers involved in designing & early operation of the facility.

This facility is in southeast N.M., underground, and in an old salt mine. Hard to believe any danger to those on the surface and probably only a hazard to those actually down in the facility and in the vicinity of the hazard.

For a waste disposal sight it’s about as good as it gets here in the states.

Let me be the first to say....

WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!!!!!!!!

/s

Now that THAT is out of the way, what is really happening?

“Underground sensors have detected excessive radiation levels inside a nuclear waste storage site “

Whoop-de-do.

A number of times when I walked through the sensors as I was leaving a “hot” work area at a nearby nuclear power plant I, too, had these “sensors (detect) excessive radiation levels” ON me. I then took the hand held Geiger counter, found the specific area of contamination, took a loop of inside out masking tape and stuck it to the offending particle. Once the particle was confirmed as now being stuck to the tape, I was free to leave. The tape was now “low-level nuclear waste”.

The sensor alarm was set to sound at a reading of 150dpm. If you take the same sensor to any sporting goods store/department and check the replacement mantles for pressurized gas lanterns, you will get a reading of about 2,000dpm due to a radioactive additive that causes the mantle to form a stronger ash when burned.

The point is, the article tells neither what has happened nor the level and scope of this leak which has occurred in a facility designed to provide protection from such leaks.

Relax, all you folks in New Mexico or with friends & loved ones there. You will probably be killed by a Colorado driver stoned on legal marijuana sooner than the radiation will cause you any harm.

Everyone is in an anti-nuke PANIC MODE! Quit worrying!

My dad worked on the PROJECT GNOME back around 1961. When that nuke was set off, it blew some radiation out the shaft to the surface and containment barriers were quickly set up.

In just a very short time the radioactivity had decayed to where it was safe to go into the blast area and go into the mine.

Nah.

In my part of NM, you’re more likely to get killed when a meth lab blows up.

Everyone thinks they are Jessie Pinkman.

They recently had a small fire at WIPP...but said it didn’t happen in the area of the waste storage. Excessive levels of radiation now? Wish the reporter would say what those levels are.

I worked in an area where some carried those pager looking radiation detectors and they would go off randomly, especially if they were walking around outside. One day a guy was refilling the soda machine and every time one of the guys would walk by his detector would go off, finally figured out it was a case of Sprite setting it off. No one seemed excited, a few months later that soda guy quit putting Sprite in the machine because no one was buying it.

Look up "Bayou Corne" as you consider the safety of an old salt mine. Just add a little water and you have a big problem.

It’s out in the middle of the desert. The rain there usually evaporates before it even hits the ground. It can be storming in Carlsbad {nearest town} and still not a drop of water making it to the ground. A bigger danger in those parts is gas pipeline line explosions.
