Mississippi is beginning the process of selecting someone to represent us in the United States Senate. Over the past 36 years Thad Cochran has been selected by the people of Mississippi to be one of our spokesmen in Washington, D.C. As we consider whether we should allow him to continue representing us we should look back and assess the job he’s done.
Politicians say a lot. They love to speak and are generally very good at saying things their audience likes to hear. But if we really want to assess the job Thad Cochran has done we should look at how he has voted. Often we find politicians say one thing but vote in an entirely different direction.
In the late 1990s the idea of gun safety locks became a popular idea. Politicians, both Republican and Democrat, supported laws that required gun safety locks, and many states passed laws requiring guns be lock when not in use. Both presidential candidates supported measures requiring gun safety locks during the 2000 campaign. During this time Illinois passed a law that required guns be kept locked or otherwise securely stored when a child under 14 may have access to them, New Jersey and California passed laws requiring guns to be sold with locks.
Following on the heels of this popular idea, in 2003 U.S. Sen. Boxer (D. California) proposed an amendment to Senate Bill 1805. The Boxer amendment would require a child safety device be supplied with any transfer of a handgun and to provide safety standards for child safety devices. Contrary to research that showed safety locks did not protect children, Sen. Cochran supported this amendment with his vote.

The lock making companies aren’t complaining.
He wanted to be sure that your attacker has a better chance of killing you.
Without the lock, you just pick up the gun, pull the trigger, and the problem is solved-assuming you know how to shoot.
They want to lock our guns but the want to break the locks on government such as the Constitution and Social Security.

Yeah, that's how crony capitalism works. Have a product no one wants? Buy a politician to make a law requiring people to purchase your product.

Loaded and unlocked weapons in a bedside holster is a little more reassuring than carrying a baseball bat when patrolling the house after being awakened by unusual sounds from downstairs.
After all, one must get MUCH closer while carrying a baseball bat, to discourage any intruders. Then there is the possibility the bat may be wrested from you and used upon yourself. But a pistol or long gun can inflict harm upon the intruder from far enough away so as to preclude that misstep.
Be sure to have a magazine of adequate size. Then you may stop shooting when the magazine is emptied. That way, when the authorities ask you why you shot the intruder 15 times, you may truthfully say, “That was all the ammunition I had at immediate reach.”

Yeah, that makes sense.
Since we are making guns inoperable, why not just weld a plug into the chamber. That way nobody can get hurt when the gun becomes obbsessed and starts shooting on its own.
Well, this former Mississippiian knows that any of the first ten (10) names in the Greenwood phone book would be a better choice than Cochran. Or Tupelo or Gulfport, or Hattiesburg or any other town or burg in the state.
The more important question is when did chris37 decide that what Sen. Cochran decides matter at all?
The answer is chris37 didn’t.
When my children were young, I showed them how a handgun works. How to cock it, load it, fire it.
Then with an UNLOADED Browning Hi-Power I handed it to them and told them to cock it and put a round in the chamber.
I found they DID NOT have the strength to pull back the slide, that is the pistol that became the house gun, without a bullet in the chamber.
Every year I tested them till they were adults.
It is important to keep safety locks on or adjacent to all home-defense firearms. That way if you have to use a handgun, you can justify its safe storage to police after the fact.
