Posted on 02/17/2014 7:07:51 AM PST by Wiz-Nerd
The rise in the number of mobile device theft all across the United States has prompted several Senators to introduce a smartphone kill switch on the federal level. This past Thursday, a proposed law called the Smartphone Theft Prevention Act was introduced by Democratic Senators Barbara Mikulski (MD), Amy Klobuchar (MN), Richard Blumenthal (CT), and Mazie Hirono (HI).
Yep. I’m sure this is all about theft....yeah, right. They don’t want to just spy on us anymore, now they want to be able to shut down our communications at will.
As always it’s under the guise of protecting mom and pop. There is always the ulterior motive with these guys.
YEAH, IT’S RIGHT THERE IN THE CONSTITUTION!
Is there a big problem now with service providers refusing to shut off your phone when you ask them to do so?
Geeze all you have to do is call your service provider when you lose your phone and they will disable it. The democrats just want to control communications when the great take over happens.
These goons motives are so transparent.
how about a Kill Switch for ObamaScare?
There is a big problem with citizens filming the police and refusing to shut off their cell phones when asked to do so.
“Smartphone “Kill Switch” Legislation Proposed”
NO, NO, NO!!!
The only person who should have that power is the owner of the smartphone. The ONLY possible reason for such legislation is to give the government power to control information. Never a good idea.
I should think if one were smart enough to get a smart phone, one would be smart enough to want one with a “kill” switch on it.
Given that CA is trying this at the state level better to see how it works there before imposing it on rest of states.
Dems love to make the entire country a test (guinea pig ) place for bad ideas., like Obamacare.
Then when they fail we are lecture that the only option is to fix them by making them even more intrusive.
There is no need for this, one more power and control grab by leftists and other fascists.
Why is filming police a problem?
This functionality is already built into the iPhone and iPad. Don’t know about the other platforms, but it’s pretty simple to set up a password, and to set up an iCloud account to locate and/or disable your lost/stolen iPhone.
The only “problem” that could exist is that the “police” are doing something they aren’t supposed to do and being recorded while doing it.
People—including my kids and grandkids laugh because all I have is a dumb phone. I have it to make and a receive phone calls. I don’t want to surf the web or anything else.
My little black outdated flip phone works for me!
I also carry a camera in my purse-—and it makes videos.
I suppose if I ever saw what I perceived to be “police brutality” I would try to film it .I just wouldn’t look through the view finder. I would hold it about shoulder high and not be paying attention at all to the camera.
They should shove that idea right up where they shoved the “internet kill switch.”
Communists... plain and simple.
I have a smart phone, I keep music, and photos on it, I do NOT BANK on it. I only bank/pay bills on my home computer or in person.
We had new windows put in, 18 months interest free, if you open a Lowe’s account. Well IF you have a Kroger’s that does gas points, you can buy Lowe’s gift cards, which are twice the point value at the moment toward cents off your gas along with your groceries. Buy it with a 1% back credit card. Take your paper bill and gift card to your local Lowe’s (cannot use gift cards online with them) and pay your bill.
You win 2 ways. There are some months gift cards are 4 times the points, food cards were this month for 2 weeks, bought our Valentine dinner Chilli’s card, got 4 times the points. Picked up some other fast food cards to boot lower amounts, but it all is extra gas points. Nice to have a $1 off a fill up. Hubby fills my low driven car from a 5 gal can, then takes it and the full time van up and fills both, saves $1 off up to 35 gals of gas.
We keep gift cards for those type places, and buy extra if we travel. As our grands and great grands are not easy to buy presents for it is simpler to buy a gift card to their favorite shopping place. Like Bass Pro for our oldest Grand son. BE SURE TO KEEP THE RECEIPTS or send them with the BD or Christmas card you send them.
I did my Christmas shopping in 10 minutes and had 4 times the points off those cards. With 7 Grands and 5 GGrands that is a lot of gift cards. Even our presents to ourselves came from Amazon Prime. Did not have to set foot in NON Christ friendly mall stores either.
IF ONLY it is for Obamaphones. ..... “theft of government properties”.
But, no. I can daydream though.
How much info can they get on a smart phone that only has music and photos on it and 1 game? No banking.
1 call to your carrier should shut the number down.
This satisfies most of the requirements for bad legislation:
It doesnt address the problem
It moves or expands the problem elsewhere
It restricts the freedoms of honest citizens
It criminalizes normal activity
It provides loopholes for the actual criminals
It creates, expands or further empowers bureaucracy
It gives congress the warm fuzzy feeeeeeeling that they are doing something
Nope. I had our provider brick my Darling Daughter’s phone when she lost it.
What happens when a hacker finds the key to the kill switch and kills everyones smart phone permanently?
The world would suddenly have a billion expensive paperweights.
You and me both .. mine's so (proudly) anachronistic it's not even black !
Cell phone cameras can be set to send video directly to the cloud, i.e. the internet thereby protecting the videographer’s content against confiscation.
That’s true, in fact the company I work for will not allow most Android phones for that very reason.
They need to be able to perform a ‘Remote Wipe’ and most Androids can be easily circumvented to prevent that.
NSA iPhone spoof commercial.
A Jury can see video of police telling a handcuffed and restrained homeless man that they are going to f--- him up, watch them beat him to death, and still acquit.
Of course, killer cop "Officer" Ramos did get booed out of a Fullerton Denny's by the customers...
It’s amazing that when I transferred my old Cell phone account to my new one A.T@ T were able to turn the old phone into a paper weight within minutes. So what’s the big deal.
I think these government clowns want to have the ability to takeover the whole cellular network at their conveniance.Kind of like they did in New York City following the 911disaster.
I don’t trust this Obama government and they shouldn’t be given the authority they ‘re asking for.
Dito, and the only reason I have a flip phone is they forced me off the analog car phone when analog cellular died.
If you like your phone on to post on FR, you can kee
It’s to help prevent theft..
(wink, wink, nudge, nudge, know what I mean?)
Not only does my Moto X have a kill switch, i can also go to a web page and find it with google maps. I can also find my kids phones, which will usually tell me where they are. Google + Moto.
That's Amy Klobuchar's bread & butter.
Surveillance video disputes details in DPD shooting (Police lie caught on tape)

Very similar features to “find my iphone”.
So, the point is that there is no need for this legislation other than giving the gov’t control over your communication devices. They’ll probably sneak in the location tracking as well.
I had my phone fully installed in the car. If you didnt think I was driving, then dont waste time calling it.
The funny thing is . I have had this account for 14 years, and I havent even set up voicemail. Dont need it. Dont want it.
Dont do SMS.
Dont do MMS.
Call my home phone, and call my cell phone. If I dont answer then I evidently dont want to be talked to. There will be no messages left, sent, or received of any type.
Bingo -- you nailed it on nearly all counts!
As with most legislation, even the name -- The Smartphone Theft Prevention Act -- has little to do with reality. (Affordable Care Act, anybody?)
How is this going to prevent the theft of smartphones?
My flip phone is still in it's original leather case.
Or, you plan ahead and get findmyiphone, seekdroid, or any of several programs to let you be in control when your phone is stolen/lost.
I feel like it's missing something though...
You are spot on!
NY Attorney General Wants Cell Phone Kill Switch
Disturbed by courts upholding the right of citizens to use their cell phones to video tape the police in action, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman wants cell phone manufacturers and service providers to install kill switches that can be remotely activated by the police.
The fear that they could be video taped without their knowledge is inhibiting law enforcement personnel in the conduct of their official duties, Schneiderman contended. Its hard to do your job when someone is looking over your shoulder. Its doubly hard if every misstep is going to be recorded and used against you.
Schneiderman also argued that unauthorized videos introduce an element of confusion to the narrative. Instead of having a single, clear picture of events there could be multiple conflicting versions. Our ability to convict apprehended suspects could be seriously hindered.
