Cabela’s Inc. Announces Passing of Richard N. Cabela, Co-Founder and Chairman Emeritus

Cabela's Incorporated (CAB) announced that Richard N. Cabela, Co-Founder and Chairman Emeritus, passed away today at his home in Sidney. He was 77.

Dick, along with his wife, Mary, and brother, Jim, founded Cabela’s somewhat inadvertently in 1961 when he purchased $45 worth of hand-tied fishing flies while in Chicago on a furniture and housewares buying trip with his father for the family’s Chappell, Neb., furniture store. With the flies not moving off the store shelf, Dick came upon the idea of selling them through the mail. His first ad, in a Casper, Wyo., newspaper, produced one sale. Rethinking his situation, Dick placed an ad in Sports Afield magazine: “FREE introductory offer!!! 5 popular Grade A hand-tied flies. Send 25c for postage and handling …” Orders started coming in and Mary typed the names and addresses of each customer on recipe cards and placed them in a shoebox. Realizing the potential for mail-order sales, Dick purchased more fishing gear and he and Mary produced a three-page mimeographed catalog which was mailed with each order.

Today, Cabela’s is a $3.6 billion company with a worldwide catalog and Internet business and 50 stores in the United States and Canada.

A new Cabelas will be opening in northern Delaware in the next few months.

Those of us behind the Iron Curtain in Maryland can’t wait.

No sales tax in DE. 6% in MD.

We’ll be shopping early and often, and the fact that we can stick it to commissar O’Malley will just be icing on the cake.

But do you think PA could be red if voter fraud were eliminated?

Romney won 55 of 67 PA counties but not a single electoral college vote because of the number of voters in the Philadelphia area. Conservatives mainly win in areas where the population density is less than 800 people per square mile. A side effect of continuing farm automation is voters needing jobs must move to higher density communal living, and eventually become communists. Unless a plague or rogue polar submarine takes out some big cities it's not looking good for conservatives. One tactic that might help is to empower big cities to raise taxes on a simple majority vote and pass all the anti-business regulation and government hiring they want. They will all quickly turn into bankrupt wastelands like Detroit. This tactic should be called economic nuking because it looks surprisingly like the real thing.

I have several thousand rounds of .22, but never use it, because I’m afraid I won’t be able to easily replace it. I shoot 5.56 without any such concerns.

It’s totally bass ackwards....

When I am back east (living in NW PA now) I make a trip to the Hamburg store. I can spend all day there like a trip to a museum... and at the end of the day maybe I leave with some beef jerky...though most of the time I save for Dietrich’s Meats.

If I don’t waste the day away in the Deer hall, aquarium, gun library, or shooting gallery... I could probably fit in Deitrich’s, Kempton Hotel, Wanamaker Kempton & Southern, and Roadside America.

Not far from Cabela’s (5 minutes) is the Pinnacle hike on Blue Mountain, a popular hiking destination and part of the AT. I often will do a 10 mile hike and then stop at Cabela’s for lunch/shopping.

“Last time there was an Ammo shortage, .22LR and 12 ga were the only rounds available.”

Just an honest question from someone who doesn’t know, when was that ammo shortage? And another follow-up, do you know what caused it?

RIP to a man who made a great store. I love, love, love the coat hubby got me from there. I call it my Sarah Palin coat. It’s gorgeous and warm as anything!

More than a great store, Cabela’s is an ardent supporter of the 2nd Amendment. That is the reason they forever have my loyalty.
