On June 30, the state of Washington will convert to marriage the domestic partnerships of thousands of gay and lesbian couples who have not gotten married on their own or not gotten a legal dissolution.
Thousands of gay and lesbian domestic partners who have not married or legally dissolved their unions by the end of June will have their relationships automatically converted to marriage courtesy of the state.
Its the final piece of the states same-sex marriage law a provision about which many couples are apparently unaware and one sure to trigger some uncomfortable conversations.
Although domestic partnerships are essentially marriage by a different name, people dont think of them as the same thing ... said Jason Holloway, president of QLaw Association, the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender bar association.
Those being plunged into matrimony will no doubt include couples who simply hadnt given it much thought.
Or there will be those who broke up in the years since they registered as domestic partners, some of them now married illegally to other people.

On my side of the state (across the mountains from Seattle) few of us voted for any of this depravity but it is only getting worse.
On the other hand, the implications of this idiocy are bound to result in some hilarity (people who broke up long ago suddenly finding themselves "married"). lol
More work for lawyers!
They are clearly dropping any pretense that it is about “gay rights” since nobody would ever considered it a “right” to have their union forcibly defined for them. It is now about getting the state’s citizens to enthusiastically accept being shackled.
That said, it may be time for the red states to just rely on the 10th Amendment when it comes to relationships between the feds and states. They should probably say that if the coastal states want to go full totalitarian and leave American values behind entirely, then let them make their bed and lie in it.
Posterity must sort this out. My generation has lost control.
I think this has got to be completely unconstitutional. The liberal media may not believe it, but there are probably SOME gay couples out there that are not in favor of same-sex “marriage” — so they’re going to essentially force the couples into it.
I’m not sure how on earth it’s okay to do that to anybody in the registry, heterosexual or homosexual. The liberals are insane.

mandatory homosexual marriage?
now, THERE’s a political platform O can run for a third term on!
I grew up in Yakima and now live in Duvall. This is the most absurd thing I’ve ever heard of. Did make me chuckle just a bit.
Yep. Bizarre is the right word.
This is the logical conclusion when the State gets into the business of defining what is or is not a marriage.
it does seem that if you advocate for more and more gov’t involvement in marriage, it is inevitable that more and more liberals will be involved in trying to regulate marriage and mess with the traditional version of it. This is likely why an increasing nubmer of conservatives have called for the goal of limiting, if not eliminating, gov’t involvement of any kind in marriage in order to save traditional, Biblical marriage.
Which is exactly what I’ve been advocating for for a very long time. Government f**** up everything it touches. Why anyone thinks marriage would be any different is totally beyond me.
Wooooh..what about hetrosexual domestic partner.???
Ya. Means no more bathhouses or thousands of partners.
Many states have “common law” marriage where hetero couples who cohabitate for a certain time are declared legally married by the state. If the homos want “equality”, then why not do this?
You would think this was a way-out-there parody, no?
But it’s been on the Seattle Times website for two days: no joke, unfortunately.
Isn’t this over-the-top, beyond the pale?
Some states with “common law” marriages say
you have to present yourself as married.
At least it used to be that way in Georgia.
there are only 7 or 8 states that allow common law marriage.
other states prohibit first cousin marriage while others allow it.
You beat me to it, top. This cannot be true. This is not constitutional, surely! Equality under the law! Gay partners will certain have a point — if they don’t do it to heteros, how can they do it to us?
