PITTSBURGH (KDKA) A group of community leaders expressed their support today, for a teacher evaluation system within the Pittsburgh Schools. The evaluation system is being funded by a $40 million grant by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
But the money is in jeopardy because of opposition by the teachers union.
Gathering in the cold, community leaders and parents called on the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers to adopt high standards of evaluation saying lower standards hurt teachers, parents.
And most especially, lowering the bar isnt good for our children who deserve the highest quality education we can provide them, said Tracey Reed Armant of A-Plus Schools.
The union and the district agreed on a system of evaluation based on classroom observation, student performance and other factors.
But the union objects that a score of 48 percent or less would require teachers to undergo retraining.

Well well well.....the teachers union is opposed to
being held to independent standards. Imagine that.
In North Carolina the teachers are bitching about their starting pay.
They got 5,000
Yet, Everyone I know whose Kids wants to get into teaching claims their are no Jobs.
Is it possible the money being from Bill Gates means this is related to common core?
And is this the only objection by teacher union? Other states (NY in particular) is objecting to common core curriculum.
If it’s like our evaluation system in Ohio, everybody should oppose it. I have no problem with accountability, but I do have a problem with a purposely faulty system.
Do away with public sector unions, and just issue school vouchers to parents.
School voucher covers X amount of tuition in the school of your choice. Force public schools to clean up their act or close the doors.
Now ask yourself, Why would teachers oppose such a grant that will show how well the TEACHERS are doing and NOT the students. Pretty simple logic there.
Poll needs freeping:
Should kindergarten attendance be mandatory?
