Fire rages and petrol bombs fly through the air as riot police crackdown on the demonstrations against President Viktor Yanukovich in Kiev's Independence Square.

At least eighteen people — including seven policemen and 11 protesters — were killed and hundreds more were injured during clashes in Kiev on Tuesday.

Many were killed by gunshot and hundreds more were injured, with dozens of them in a serious condition, police and opposition representatives said.

Despite Western demands for restraint and dialogue, the state security service first set a deadline for the demonstrators to end disorder or face "tough measures", and then the police advanced into Independence Square, the center of the protest campaign.

I would put snipers on the buildings. When they tried to kill a policeman, a bullet through the skull

That's the kind of escalation the police are apparently, for now at least, trying to avoid. Because there are enough people on both sides, with weapons, including potentially members of the police and armed forces, that it could end up with snipers on the buildings from both sides - and lots of them.

Nobody should advocate that kind of thing. Take a look at the news and videos from Syria to see where that kind of violence ends up. What is necessary is for both sides to calm down and move away from further violence.

Right, agitprop procedure is to agitate, elicit a forceful response, then propgandize to make maximum use of the response.

You try to gain the implied position of being in the right.

The big bad government did ___.

Of course, you don’t include your agitation in your propaganda report.

Could be.

The line of fire is a novel technique, it certainly creates a spectacle and stops traditional massed riot police tactics.

No Muslim in sight. Corrupt Russian puppet president in place thought he could intimidate people with kidnapping and tortures, backfiring now

I was in Poland when this mess started and when the news was breaking the word was out that those rioting were outsiders bussed in to push this. The EU is destroying all the nations it has got its fingers in. Look at Greece, Spain, Ireland, Italy, France. All broke and no answers. Absorbing other nations and destroying their financial systems. George Soros and his ilk need to be jailed and the US and Russia needs to stay out of this and let the Ukrainians decide.

You need a corrupt government for a color revolution to start up, otherwise all the agitprop would fall on deaf ears. I haven’t read Soros mission statement but if it’s to agitate an already agitated population, where is his transgression?

The problem is, the Russians will not and have not “stayed out of this”.

I would suggest reading the Wikipedia article on the Ukraine to get started. No one on any side of the situation in the Ukraine will be happy with that article... but that may mean it strikes some semblance of balance.

Also, to get a taste of the politics, the article on jailed ex-President (and opposition leader) Yulia Tymoshenko is, whatever one thinks of her, fascinating. It is also demonstrative of just how disfunctional Ukraine’s politics are. (The US is presently awful, the Ukraine is at least 10x worse.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yulia_Tymoshenko

If one studies up on the Ukraine for a few evenings, with no preset bias in place, better understanding can be gained.

I read that there are 500,000 Ukrainian citizens with firearms licenses. Think that was in the WSJ.

Not much for a 45 mln nation.

Too bad. Ukrainians deserve to sleep in a bed they made for themselves.
I think both Russia and EU has to back off and let Ukrainians sort things up. There is none of US business as well.
If they can’t have a stable government - let them live in constant turmoil.
The most amusing is that the Russia hasn’t withdrawn it’s aids package and still pumping billions into a mess. It won’t ever pay off for them.
