Even if the Pittsburgh Public Schools were funded by taxpayers at three times the level of suburban school districts and had more resources in terms of science labs, computers, musical instruments, art supplies, modern infrastructure, sports facilities and motivated teachers, it wouldn't make a difference to students who have not internalized the value of education.
What's missing is the active, radical involvement of every parent of a black child in the Pittsburgh school district.
This goes way beyond showing up for parent-teacher nights. This means supervising homework, modeling an appreciation for learning from the first day that child comes into the world, limiting media distractions that reinforce negative stereotypes and ruthlessly enforcing an ethic of achievement that prevents the pathology of failure from taking root.
This means parents have to stop making excuses. Instead of blaming teachers for intellectually incurious children, they have to become involved in their children's education.
While demanding competent teachers is fine, parents have to demand more from themselves and even more from their children, because they begin life at a disadvantage. Parents of black students have to become insistent stakeholders who personally reinforce the value of education even if they're not educated themselves. A home with more video games than books is a home guaranteeing failure.

People who are insecure situations are very hard to teach.
Wow, they are just now figuring this out? Amazing how long it takes for people to realize our brave new world of separate cultures and anti family social policies is the root cause of 90% of our nations problems.
Doing well in school is not acting white. It is what works. It always has for all cultures and races.
Very popular these days to blame the deficiencies of the kids on their parents.
Personally, I don’t buy it.
LBJ’s ‘Great Society’ should take the major blame for breaking up families.
Does Jesse Jackson know the Pit-Gazette is straying off the reservation?? There’ll be hell to pay, Tony!
What is the basis for you to say that? Details please.
if you ever watch the “first 48”, you can see that the inner city youth are doomed. but hopefully, not our entire country.
You are right. If doing well in school is acting white...then what, being a dumb s##t your whole life is acting black? Gee, what a nice stereotype they apply to themselves.
I’ve got 20 long years in the high school classroom of empirical data that says: the way the children are raised is the determining factor as to what they will accomplish in school. There are outliers, anomalies, of course, but they prove the exception.
You obviously don’t have experience with the system. There is no shortage of people who are ignorant, and determined to remain ignorant. They infect their kids, generation after generation.
Yeah, you’re right - must be “the system.”
You’ll be surprised at the effect a parent’s lack of drive to see their children succeed, and to take all steps to make sure that happens, can have on those children. A lack of care can destroy a child. Some succeed in spite of it, others flounder because they needed a foundation to be laid, and they never had it.
AND thats the ones that survive abortion...
Don't forget this:
It really is sad.
I don’t buy it either. It’s a combination of factors. Not only parents but neighbors, what kids watch, teachers etc. I personally know some families were the parents were well known “pillars of the community” but the kids were a-holes. Parents can only do so much..
Graph chart of average IQ?
Parents are only part of it, proper attitude is essential too - and most blacks don’t have it.
Part of learning is being constructively criticised, and blacks, for whatever reason, cannot take that.
When you further factor in that most teachers are white - especially at the post-secondary level - the criticism becomes doubly unbearable. Result? Another black student drops out, rather than be criticised by a honky.
Just sayin’ ....
Poor white students outperform well-to-do black students. Is it attitude or is it IQ?
“.....it wouldn’t make a difference to students who have not internalized the value of education.

Why do they need a good education and other skills? The “gubmint” will take care of them the rest of their miserable lives. They will continue to get all that “Free S...” and live happily ever after, spawning another generation just like them. (Sarc), and DISGUSTING to boot.
This has been known for a long time. It’s just that few people have the courage to say it - they are in fear of losing their jobs.
——to students who have not internalized the value-—
It might help if they live somewhere folks don’t talk left speak about internalized values.
The jungle of Pittsburgh and other cities has values, the Law of the Jungle. The LOJ precludes all other factors including those of school.
While growing up in a single parent home is far from optimal this is just more excuse making.
Really, the research on this goes back to the 1960’s and the War on Poverty. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (Democrat) raised the alarm early regarding the findings of those specialists that were trying to help the impoverished of our nation and their children. The research on this is just astounding and is long term. I don’t know where you can find this article but it is a good on this subject. Here’s the name of a very good paper that gives data on what was done and the results. It basically states the importance of speaking and interacting with your children. The results are in the title. By the age of 3 some children already had a huge advantage in learning.

The Early Catastrophe - The 30 Million Word Gap by Age 3
By Betty Hart and Todd R. Risley
I should point out the Scholastic Red Article I mentioned did not target any ethnic groups but families from low incomes who’s children traditionally had low achievement.
This is why I'm always willing to cut inner-city teachers a break. You have to have something to work with.
You’ve nailed it.
There are currently limited vouchers and folks line up around the block each year begging to get their children out of those neighborhood centers of no learning. It was funny to see her agreeing with Ted Cruz
Jack, imagine being in a room with 25 kids who have no discipline, no values, and no incentive to sit and listen to a teacher. The three or four kids who truly want to learn are lost in the chaos.
black kids learning = oxymoron?
Of course there are kids who just don’t try, but I think this is focusing on those failing schools, not suburban schools where a few rogue kids want to defy their parents rule. This is more in the line of crack head or pot smoking parents who don’t bother to see if the kids even have food.
It would ALSO help to FIRE any teacher who cannot score above the 75th percentile in the SAT subject tests for any subject she might be teaching. I've met some pretty incompetent teachers.
Understanding boys motivation is real simple: they will be interested in whatever looks like it will get them laid. If being proficient in math improves their odds better than being proficient in rap, then suddenly you will see more boys sweating over their math books.
——This means parents have to stop making excuses-—
The assumption here is that the parents give a damn. There in no evidence presented to justify that assumption.
Grand ma might but with three daughters and ??? grand kids, she is overwhelmed
The gatekeepers are ultimately in control of the keymasters, eh?
