Truce crumbles amid gunfire in Ukraine, at least 20 dead

Kiev, Ukraine (CNN) -- A shaky truce crumbled Thursday as gunfire erupted at Independence Square, the center of anti-government protests and an increasingly violent crisis that has left at least 48 people dead and hundreds injured in recent days.

At least 20 protesters died Thursday, said Oleg Musiy, head of the protesters' medical service. A police officer also was killed, the interior ministry said.

It's unclear what prompted the gunfire just hours after the government declared a truce. But CNN crews at the scene reported that as security forces were moving away from the area, a group of protesters pursued them, throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails.

It is painful to watch this slow moving disaster. I wish it was resolved quickly, one way or another.

The “truce” was just an opportunity for both sides to regroup and reload. Reconciliation is still a long ways away.

The Ukraine is, by geography and cultural heritage, more a part of Europe than it is of Russia. But Russia lies to the east, like a great dog taking a bite out of the Ukraine’s hindquarters.

The Ukraine is the gateway from Russia to much of the southern and southeastern part of Europe, and major ports on the Black Sea. As such, much of the commerce that flows in and out of Russia must necessarily flow through the Ukraine to warm-water ports and via rail and pipeline to parts of what was once the Soviet hegemony of eastern Europe. Strategically, Russia MUST keep a presence in the Ukraine.

RE: I wish it was resolved quickly, one way or another.

Personally, I side with the protesters. A win by the other side means a slow backslide to the former USSR.

Right on the heels of Obama’s “threat” of consequences.

He is literally the biggest joke in the world.

Me too, but protesters are dying for nothing: their leaders are inept and unwilling to take responsibilities. Nobody wants the revolution to succeed but few brave Ukrainians on Maidan. Politicians playing games while the creme of the nation is perishing in wain.

Aside from that, it is an important food producing region. The Chinese recently struck a deal with them to lease farmland which amounts to 5% of total land in the Ukraine.

It is looking more and more like it will end up becoming a civil war in the Ukraine.

The protestors need to invest in sniper riffles of their own with good scopes and start targeting those government snipers.

Phooey to the Soros-funded Uniates!!!!

Ukraine is ORTHODOX!!!! EU membership means mandatory “gay” parades and “gay” marriage, massive muslim immigration, and atheist rule (at least until the muslims take over).

And we don’t need those things here in America, either!!!!

Both sides in the Ukraine mess are using deadly force, it’s not a protest, it’s nasty violence. The gas bottle bombs and bricks the protestors throw are as deadly as bullets. The cops retaliate with snipers to try to shoot the bomb throwers. Neither side wants to lose or back off. The US, European Community can’t stop it. Maybe when the Olympics are over, Putin will send in his army and offer to mediate.

It seems like you are assuming these snipers belongs to a government.

They are shooting protesters in Venezuela too but the government there controls the media so the world can not see it on TV. In todays world if there is no video then there is no story, people are just as dead but there’s no story.

If Putin sends his barbarians in - it will be all-out war. Ukraine remembers too well the suffering under Russians. The whole revolution is about being as far from Russia as possible.
