Nun, 84, Gets 3 Years for Breaking Into Uranium Locker
Newser ^ | 2/18/14

An 84-year-old nun has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison for breaking into and defacing a storage bunker holding bomb-grade uranium in a peace demonstration at a Tennessee weapons plant. Megan Rice was sentenced Tuesday along with activists Greg Boertje-Obed, 58, and Michael Walli, 65. The men were sentenced to more than five years in prison. All sentences were less than the recommended minimum guidelines, the Knoxville Sentinel reports.

Rice asked Judge Amul Thapar to put her in prison for life, but he declined. "I just can’t accommodate you on that," he said. The three activists cut through three fences on July 28, 2012, and reached a storage bunker that holds the nation's primary supply of bomb-grade uranium. They painted messages, hung banners, and threw blood on the bunker wall. While officials claimed there was never any danger of the protesters reaching materials that could be detonated or used to assemble a dirty bomb, the break-in raised serious questions about security.

I remember back in the 80's the No Nukes concerts. Just about everyone who was someone at the time, Bruce Springsteen, Pat Benatar, an up and coming Madonna and others performed at these venues to "raise awareness" about how eeevilness of nuclear proliferation, especially the US and to a lesser extent, the "little satan" Israel. Now that the Iranians and possibly the N Koreans are well on their way to develop nukes, where are the self righteous celebrities now? (crickets chirping). And as far this nun, talk about Christian zealots trying to impose their morality on others. Gee, where do the atheists stand on this one?

We can only rejoice in the fact that this liberal generation hell bent on destroying this country will croak soon and our children will save themselves.

Where the hell were the security guards? Did they ever face any charges?

How did these individuals come upon their knowledge of the precise location of this material?

(*sigh*) Loads of religious sisters (mostly elderly, at this point), getting arrested for “peace demonstrations”... but how many of that generation/mindset have been arrested for protesting at abortion mills? I suspect the number is less than one...

Yep. No sympathy from me because she is 84 and a nun. Uranium is not a chemical to mess with lightly.

I personally do not care for lawn chemicals. Not only does that sh*t eventually end up in your ground water, but our society's fetish for green uniform lawns and wiping out natural plants like clover and dandelions is, I believe, a major cause of destroying our honey bee colonies.

Were I to "protest" by breaking into and vandalizing lawn chemical storage facilities, I would put myself and the public in far less danger than this self-righteous biddy did.

Don’t forget all the “Nuns” who are handing out condoms and promoting the radical liberal agenda....

That's the big story here - no security. That nun isn't Chuck Norris so I hope the storage bunker is bit more secure now.

“Where the hell were the security guards?”

My thought was, if an 84 year old nun can reach weapon’s grade radioactive material, what about dedicated 20 year old Muslims who want to make a dirty bomb? Something is seriously wrong with security here. You’re right. The story here isn’t a peacenik nun. It’s the dreadful lack of security over potentially deadly material.

This sort of activism is awesomely dangerous. I recall animal rights terrorists who broke into a CDC lab and let all the animals loose. Some were infected with plague. Fortunately, the animals must have died before passing it on. But the potential for devastation is high.

O is not as big a problem as the one he brought to the table now running the IRS and EPA and all the others in his cabinet like Kerry - more harm is down my liberals at the rules and policy level.

It is the ideology not the man that must be stopped.

Post modern nuns seem to be more obsessed with abortion and war protests than with educating the nation’s children.

Oh this was a HUGE deal. This was the infamous Y-12 breach. Lots of folks lost their jobs. There was lots of retraining. There was a change in the contractor that provided security at the national labs.

other than that.... crickets

They didn’t get anywhere near the actual uranium.

they spray painted and threw blood on the building housing it.

Made it through three fences, but they never got inside.

Wonder if Sister Megan will be as enthusiastic for a life behind bars after three or four months.

Prison ain’t no convent.

[”Huh? 0 wasn’t elected by octogenarians, and not by just blacks either.”] I don’t know about that. In my moms retirement home she tells me that she figures 90% of the residents voted for Obama and these people are very well off money wise. Retired Bankers, clergy, Insurance executives, about 99% white there.I remember seeing a life size cutout of Obama there and asked about it, she told me all the residents were posing and having pictures taken with it and she already had people stop talking to her because she had the audacity to disapprove. Likewise in the parking lot, Obama bumper stickers all over.Just cause your older doesn’t mean your wiser.

While I agree with you that a lot of the older ones voted for him the primary demographic of idiots for 0 was white and younger; the younger voters went to 0 by a 24% margin
