Ukraine Facing Civil War: Lviv Declares Independence from Yanukovich Rule

Ukraine's western region of Lviv has reportedly declared independence from the central government.

Hours after protesters seized the prosecutor's office in central Lviv and forced a surrender by interior ministry police, the executive committee of the region council - also called the People's Rada – claimed control over the region.

"The regime has begun active military action against people. Dozens of people have been killed in Kiev and hundreds have been wounded. Fulfilling the will of society, the executive committee of the Lviv region's council, the People's Rada, is assuming full responsibility for the fate of the region and its citizens," read a statement.

The executive committee was led by Petro Kolodiy, chairman of the Lviv region's council.

Lviv lies close to the border with Poland and was one of the venues for the Euro 2012 football tournament. Over the past months, the city has become a powerful engine driving the insurgency against president Viktor Yanukovich.

The region, which is traditionally hostile to the easterner Yanukovich and favours closer ties with the European Union, has a population of 2.5 million.

"This will not end well and the people of the far West Ukraine will soon be battling with the Ukrainian Army."

I've seen no reason to believe the Ukrainian army is on board for that.

A partition of the country along the Dnieper river, as is the historical NORM, appears to be the only solution.

Only the Soviets ever thought this could be one country.

Lviv is pretty close to Krakow and Warsaw. Only a couple hundred miles I believe.

There’s a bunch of those types being outed. Here and elsewhere.

Amazing how similar the wording is they are using.

You read about it. You want to believe it’s just peoples imagination getting the better of them. But then you see the concerted messaging in action from multiple sources and you realize how big the scope really is.

This ain’t gonna end well.

So your sources for the anti-russia conspiracy angle are Pravda and Russia Today? I’ll take that under consideration.

I understand that the U.S. media is almost completely an arm of the Democrat party. I don’t go running to Russian state-owned media to get my news (nor do I trust 9/11 Truther websites).

It is one country for Ukrainians. East-West divide is imagined and promoted in Kremlin. They are trying to pull out the Georgian scenario to get some legitimacy for coming invasion.

"I've seen no reason to believe the Ukrainian army is on board for that. "

The Ukrainian Army is culturally, if not ethnically, Russian. If ordered to "exert national control and suppress the criminal gangs" THEY WILL DO SO.

I don’t rely on the AJ website, I just saw it linked on another forum. What interested me is the ‘connecting of the dots’ in the article.

The video that was recently released seemed strange to me the way it was edited and had a ‘too professional’ smack to it.

Ukrainian protestors singing their National Anthem during yesterday’s violence.

They’ve been doing this on the hour, every hour, for months.

God’s Blessings on these freedom fighters.

Lyrics in English:

Ukraine’s Glory Has Not Perished

Ukraine’s freedom has not yet perished, nor has her glory,
Upon us, fellow Ukrainians, fate shall smile once more.
Our enemies will vanish like dew in the sun,
And we too shall rule, brothers, in a free land of our own.

CHORUS
We’ll lay down our souls and bodies to attain our freedom,
And we’ll show that we, brothers, are of the Cossack nation.

We’ll stand together for freedom, from the Syan to the Don,
We will not allow others to rule in our motherland.
The Black Sea will smile and grandfather Dnipro will rejoice,
For in our own Ukraine fortune shall flourish again.

CHORUS

Our persistence and our sincere toils will be rewarded,
And freedom’s song will resound throughout all of Ukraine.
Echoing off the Carpathians, and rumbling across the steppes,
Ukraine’s fame and glory will be known among all nations.

CHORUS
