Texas Republican John Cornyn supplemented his Senate salary with a trio of public pensions last year from his days as a Texas judge and elected official — a practice some fiscal watchdog groups have attacked as "double dipping."

Cornyn, who is the minority whip and the No. 2 ranking Republican in the Senate, reported collecting $65,383 in public retirement benefits in 2012 in addition to his $174,000 salary as a U.S. senator.

I don’t have a dog in this fight, but would you be more likely to vote for him if he refused to accept a pension he legally earned? Or if he donated those pensions to a charity or whatever?

In his first public comments since updating his disclosure forms, Cornyn said in a conference call with reporters last week that the delayed disclosures were an “oversight.”

He declined to elaborate and when asked to respond to criticism about “double-dipping,” the San Antonio Republican quipped, “I don’t think my microphone’s working, I said that’s all I have for you on that.”

In Texas, a teacher cannot receive Social Security earned from supplementary jobs and qualify for their Texas Retirement System retirement payments. This is how teachers are treated by the greedy millionaire politicians.i

Clearly he doesn't need to be in the Senate any longer, and should retire to enjoy all the pensions and let a real Conservative take his seat.

Somewhere in all this I expect you’ll find the Texas Legislature approved
rules/regulations regarding pension benefits and set aside tax monies to pay them.

If he earned the pensions for doing the jobs then what is the problem?

And the Texas Legislature had which “majority” when these rules & regulations were promulgated? Bettcha it was the GOPe, the self-serving bastards. Go into elective office poor and come out rich, that’s the “American Way,” all the while you continually “decry how the government is screwing the taxpayer.” Out of the 535 “members” of the Congress, I will wager that there’s less than a dozen who don’t deserve to be in jail.

*************

Good question. But my guess would be the Democrats had control of the TX Leg
when all this was orginally established. However changes, etc. if made and needed
approval in the later years would have been under the GOP. The Texas Senate became
GOP controlled in 1996 and the Texas House in 2002.

He cuts the military pensions yet keeps 3 pensions for himself. And he’ll have a 4th pension, social security and free healthcare for life after he’s evicted from the Senate.

He earned his pensions and he should get them regardless of his stupidly hypocritical vote on military pensions.

I agree! the problem is not the guy collecting but the system that put them in place.
