UKIP Leader Accepts Clegg's Challenge for EU Membership Debate

Nigel Farage and Deputy Prime Minister Represent Opposite Ends of In/Out Argument

LONDON— Nigel Farage, the leader of the small United Kingdom Independence Party, on Friday accepted a challenge from Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg to debate Britain's membership of the European Union, paving the way for the most ardent advocates of each side of the in/out argument to lock horns.

Britain's future in the EU has become an increasingly open question after Prime Minister David Cameron pledged that if he wins a second term next year he will renegotiate Britain's ties with the bloc and then hold a national referendum on the U.K.'s membership under the new terms by the end of 2017.

Speaking on LBC radio, which has offered to host the debate, Mr. Farage said he wanted Mr. Cameron, the leader of the Conservative party, and opposition leader Ed Miliband to take part, but accepted that was unlikely and he would take on Mr. Clegg regardless.

"It's on. I can hardly wait," Mr. Farage said on LBC, the day after Mr. Clegg laid down the gauntlet on the station.

Mr. Clegg, the leader of the centrist Liberal Democrats—the smaller party in the governing coalition—was looking forward to what would be a lively debate, a spokesman said.

Debating Nigel Farage would be like shooting it out with an M1 tank.

“Debating Nigel Farage would be like shooting it out with an M1 tank.”

Me too, Nick Clegg done this because his party (part of the coalition government here) is about to get wiped out at these elections and most likely next year.

He sold his soul for a bit of power and his supporters at the last election haven’t forgotten that.

In all honesty, it is quite possible he will also be losing his seat in Parliament.

The wind is behind the sales of UKIP, and I couldn’t be more proud......Nigel is our guy, no doubt about it, the last hope for the UK.

Clegg’s got zero chance against this man in a debate. Farage has too many truths on his side and he’s a more effective orator.

I agree, I guess through God’s sovereignty he has made Clegg issue an ill fated challenge.

Nigel Farage will clean his clock.
