Coming soon to New York: Mandatory state-run parenting classes?

Via Ace. “Not only would parents have to attend” if they want their kid to pass sixth grade, notes Walter Olson at Cato, “but for good measure the bill would require employers to bestow a paid day off each year for employees who are parents to do so.” Sounds good to some New Yorkers, as you’re about to see.

Here’s the bill, which you can read in 30 seconds. The state would put together workshops on 12 different subjects with parents required to attend four, one of which must be a workshop on sexual abuse. That’s the bill’s saving grace potentially; even Democrats who might otherwise balk at forcing parents to take state instruction on caring for their kids (are there any Democrats like that left?) will think twice before opposing a law that seeks to prevent child abuse. And for the ones who won’t balk, this makes for a nice foothold for future expansions of state oversight into largely private matters. Bloomberg’s much-mocked Big Gulp ban operated the same way. It was a small inconvenience in practice, but the principle is significant. That’s why it was worth his time.

Interesting tidbit about the chief sponsor, Ruben Diaz Sr.: He is indeed a Democrat but he’s also (somewhat notoriously in a very blue city) a Pentecostal minister and social conservative. He’s pro-life and voted against legalizing gay marriage more than once as a state senator. If anyone can build some bipartisan support for this in the legislature, he might be the guy.

I propose manditory classes in the Constitution, the Revolutionary War and Freedman’s philospophy on ecomonics for all lawmakers. There will be a test at the end and harsh consequences if they fail.

OMG! How did my husband and I ever manage to raise 5 productive, well adjusted children to adulthood w/o the gummit’s assistance?

Must be a miracle!

Eliminate all the nonsense. Have the state take the child from birth so it can be put into education camps from the start.

How do the do-gooders address the problem with children having children?

Those free Head Start programs seem to have an extreme level of getting involved with raising the kids. Friends who adopted a foreign child also got "invited" to free testing and evaluation through the public schools, complete with free remediation the 4 year old might (according to them) benefit from. Another thing they do is identify learning and other disabilities at a ridiculous age, so they can get therapy, counseling, meds when they're scarcely out of diapers.

This is the next logical step. Why shouldn't all parents have the "benefits" our wonderful government has to offer? By the time the mainstream recognizes a problem of government overreach, it's probably too late to do much about it.

All parents must be taught to teach their kids to be trannies or gay or something?

It is seriously time to talk secession. This country is too big, the urban hellholes and blue states have too much sway over the rest of the country. Many folks just want to be left alone and live how they see it. Federalism was supposed to take care of this, but it is ignored.

There are many areas that can be its own state. Time to start splitting up states.

This won’t pass.

The idea is to insert the idea into the mainstream for future implementation.

This is the liberal long-game.

“.....one of which must be a workshop on sexual abuse.”

So now the government is going to teach people how to abuse their children! This is just plain wrong! /s

Agree - they need to limit the program to those who vote Democrat - they're usually the ones with no parenting skills/aspirations. Plus, if the State decides it needs to happen, you can bet it will be packed full of leftist propaganda and as useful as making a man attend a breast feeding class.
