LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- With lots of room for growth, the Jefferson County Republican Party is aiming to widen its appeal to people of different ethnic and economic backgrounds.
The GOP's "Party for the Party" event on Friday, Feb. 21, not only brings together five-term incumbent Mitch McConnell with Tea Party favorite Rand Paul, but as WHAS11s Political Editor Joe Arnold reports highlights Paul's outreach to black voters.

Rand Paul is a fool if he thinks he can outbid Democrats in handing out freebies to the Takers for their votes. It will never happen.
“Appeal to minorities”.....how many times have we heard this term. Now another, former bright spot on the political horizon, starts preaching. Maybe when these politicians stand by conservative principles, they will learn that they will improve their standing with minorities. Get them off welfare, get them back to work, let them be all they can be, close the borders, no amnesty for illegals, educate the kids and on and on.
...Rand Paul is really just a Libertarian like his old man. Rand is smarter than Ron and has figured out that his Libertarian base has more in common with the socially liberal/fiscally conservative GOPe. Rand Paul intends to exploit that common bond to gain the 2016 GOP nomination.

The best reform would be to get the federal government out of education. Each district should be in charge of its own education system. Abolish the Department of Education.

Unfortunately, like many of the major debates in Washington, immigration has become a stalemate-where both sides are imprisoned by their own rhetoric or attachment to sacred cows that prevent the possibility of a balanced solution.
Immigration Reform will not occur until Conservative Republicans, like myself, become part of the solution. I am here today to begin that conversation.
Let's start that conversation by acknowledging we aren't going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants.
If you wish to work, if you wish to live and work in America, then we will find a place for you...

I think the point is don’t change our beliefs, but we must take our message of smaller government, economic equality of opportunity (free markets) and getting rid of big government so there is opportunity for people to work and not just live mediocre lives in poverty, school choice, pro-life, marriage and Christian values, as well as just general engagement with minorities would work wonders. I believe this is the crux of Rand Paul’s message, if not it’s at least what I agree with. AND NO, I don’t agree with Amnesty, at least WE HAVE TO SECURE THE BOARDER 100% before we ever even discuss what to do with illigals.
Question for you, Jim: Have you seen the viral videos where minority activists/voters in Chicago ARE complaining about Obama and sounding almost (sometimes very much) TEA Party?

Well that’s fine, then no Rand Paul, but I still think my point about minority outreach (without giving up our beliefs), is valid.

It's the best outreach ever. Much better than Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, South America or anywhere else on the planet.

Conservatives have to put together an American Manifesto with the basic talking points that we can broadcast to the whole nation without having to sell out our grandchildren’s future in order to get more votes.
