Bill Allowing Businesses to Turn Away Gays Reaches Ariz. Governor

A bill that would allow businesses to refuse service to customers based on personal, religious beliefs is now on the desk of Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, as protests continue.

The state legislature passed the bill late Thursday, but not without a fiery debate.

"This is simply protecting religious freedom that is recognized and defended and supported in the First Amendment that the founders wanted, nothing else," said Republican Rep. Eddie Farnsworth, who sponsored the bill.

"There's only type of equality," said House Minority Leader Chad Campbell, a Democrat. "And it's equal."

Brewer, a Republican, vetoed a similar bill last year but had not said whether she'd sign the latest measure into law.

In the US, 21 states have laws specifically prohibiting a business from discriminating based on sexual orientation.

States, however, including Kansas, Ohio and Idaho have tried to pass similar laws to Arizona's bill and failed. Utah is now considering one.

Another deliberately mendacious headline. The First Amendment rights of religious people are nonexistent to these “JournoLists”.

I know this is from the UK, but...

Muslim staff working for Marks & Spencer have been given permission to refuse to serve customers buying alcohol or pork products.

NO SHIRT, NO SHOES, NO SERVICE.

Also, we have a God-Given inalienable Right to refuse to celebrate or endorse, with our labor or goods, any practice that directly insults or contradicts our deeply held Religious beliefs, Cultural Mores, Traditional Values, Family Codes, or Moral Imperatives. Your Right to “Pursuit of Happiness” does not trump my right to Life and Liberty.

Sexual orientation - this made-up term being part of discrimination laws, on par with skin colour, race, etc., was the mistake.

When you decide that something which many people regard as sin should be protected, there’s trouble ahead, for sure.

And they are always welcome to go pursue their happiness some place else.

I got turned away from a repair shop yesterday because they don’t work on the brand of equipment I own. So I went to the next shop who wrote up the WO and started the repair.

Given their logic I should have gone to a judge to have the first shop forced to repair the machine.

So if the government tells you who you must serve and how to conduct business, you are no longer a free citizen, but an indentured servant at best

Interesting comment by the Democrat and he’s right. There is only one equality. Therefore your sexuality shouldn’t trump my freedom of association. We’ve got to get back to the Founding Principles of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Freedom of Association is as important as any other freedom and in some ways more important as it is directly associated with Freedom of Thought.

This is the same fascist approach to the Boy Scouts and a variety of other private organizations. Private property is private. I can refuse you entrance to my home, but not my place of work or business. It’s nonsense on its face.

100% correct.

Homosexuality is a BEHAVIOR NOT an ancestry or ethnicity or religious conviction.

Freepers love to conflate religious bigotry with behavior. They have to hate...someone...

The Constitution explicitly forbids the mixing of religion with government

/don’t care about homos; I don’t feel threatened by them
//everyone has the right to deny service via freedom of association
///everyone has the right to boycott same for same reason

By force of law, should a Jewish clothier be forced tailor a Nazi militant's uniform? By force of law, should an African clothier be forced to tailor a Klan member's robe? By force of law, should a Christian clothier be forced to tailor a homosexual man's wedding "dress"? I submit not. Don't throw the Christians down this slippery slope, Jan Brewer. It's the devil's trap. Sign the bill into law.

Hey... If I, a business owner, watch as customers enter my place of business and see that they are conducting themselves as ladies and gentlemen then I have no reason to ask them to leave. But if anyone enters my business acting inappropriately then I am going to ask them to hit the road. I'm not in business to proselytize my customers or employees into any religion, political party, sexual orientation or lifestyle and I'll be damned if I'm going to let some malcontents do it.
The US Constitution and all the rights guaranteed in it are already on the books. Enforce them. Stop trying to write new legislation that say what is already there. Redundancy does not make problems go away.

You’re the only one expressing hate, AFAICT.

Do consider it “hate” to decry the behavior of homosexuals en flagrante in the streets during “Gay Pride” parades?

The bill should be vetoed, because you simply don’t pass laws because some liberal judge in another state is thwarting the constitution.

You get the ruling overturned.

AND you get the judge removed.

Talked to my sister yesterday we agreed we are sick of the homosexual mafia. She believes homosexual marriage will become the law of the land. To counter I said marriage belongs in churches only and the government needs ti stay out of the marriage business let grant civil contracts and leave faith alone.
